Coherence Trailer Ruins A Dinner Party With Comet-Inspired Chaos

In the days of yore, back when people still used the phrase “in days of yore,” comets were objects of superstition, believed to be harbingers of dire things to come. It makes sense when you stop taking your 21st century science education for granted. You look up at the sky and it’s always the same, every single night of your life. But then, one night, suddenly there’s a new light up there. Since you have no way of knowing it’s just a big frozen slushball, it’s got to mean something, right? That whole “comets will fuck you up” mentality seems to be at the core of the sci-fi thriller Coherence, which, among others, stars Nicholas Brendon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame.

Coherence was written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, who previously worked as a storyboard artist on the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks, had a “story by” credit on Rango, and was at one point co-writing a new Fraggle Rock movie. At this point he’s a big question mark for us, but we love to be pleasantly surprised, so let’s hope Coherence does the trick. It’s gathered some high praise from sites we respect, so we’re cautiously optimistic about this one.

Here’s the Coherence synopsis from the official website:

On the night of an astronomical anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, COHERENCE is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.

I like that the trailer is compelling without actually spoiling any of the film’s secrets. It’s all too common for trailers to casually reveal major plot elements that, at least theoretically, were supposed to be a surprise. This Coherence trailer doesn’t provide any answers about what the hell is going on, and that’s a good thing, all the better to make you actually want to buy a ticket. That same philosophy extends to the movie poster below, which we reported on last fall. It’s one of those cryptic visuals that I’m sure will make perfect sense in retrospect, but it definitely leaves me intrigued. Coherence has been making the festival circuit — and picking up awards — for a while now, and it looks like it’ll be getting a limited theatrical run this summer. We’ve got the info on those screenings below, but if none of them are in cities near you I’m sure Coherence will hit home video soon thereafter. Coherence stars Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Elizabeth Gracen (Highlander the TV series), Maury Sterling (Homeland), Lauren Maher (the Pirates of the Caribbean series), Emily Baldoni (Automotive), screenwriter Lorene Scarfaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), Hugo Armstrong (OK, Good) and Alex Manugian, who also conceived the story with Byrkit.
