The Wachowskis have always been considered secretive filmmakers. Famously, the pair had evaded recording commentary tracks for their movies and even avoided doing video interviews. It was only recently that we’ve seen the Wachowskis promoting their new film with German director Tom Tykwer, Cloud Atlas. Now more images and promotional materials are being released, including this great piece of concept art illustrating what the future will look like.
The piece was created by Monica Manganelli, who was hired onto Cloud Atlas’s art department after impressing the Wachowskis with her work on Facebook. It depicts the future cityscape in the “An Orison of Sonmi-451” section of the David Mitchell novel upon which the film is based. It looks gorgeous! The super-city feels like an amalgam of different existing coastal cities from around the world like New York City, Sydney, Taipei, and Hong Kong.
Manganelli worked on the pre-production stages of Cloud Atlas. She tells the Italian movie blog, BadTaste.IT, that the story by David Mitchell consisted of six smaller stories, which were then split equally between Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis. Manganelli was assigned to work with the Wachowskis in creating concept art for the future world of Cloud Atlas.
Cloud Atlas has been under lock and key until only a month ago when a six-minute trailer popped up on the Internet, and now we’re seeing a lot more of Cloud Atlas than compared to what the Wachowskis released for The Matrix trilogy or Speed Racer. The early buzz from the film suggests the filmmaking trio has a real hit on their hands.
Cloud Atlas opens in theaters on October 26th.
