Charlize Theron Talks About Her Prometheus Character

Prometheus opens internationally on June 1st, and in the US a week later on June 8th. So depending on where you live, you only have to wait another week or two see Ridley Scott’s return to science fiction. I know you’re excited, we all are, but try to calm down. To satiate your hunger a bit, 20th Century Fox has released a new featurette about Charlize Theron’s character, Meredith Vickers.

Vickers is an executive for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, the company that finances a scientific journey into deep space on the titular ship Prometheus. While most of the ship’s crew is on a mission of discovery, to seek out clues as to that ultimate mystery—the origin of humanity—Vickers is no nonsense, all business. Her job is to protect her company’s interests and the bottom line, and she will do it at all costs.

Theron was originally slated to play the lead role, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, but wound up with a smaller part due to scheduling conflicts. Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) ultimately landed the part of Shaw, but from what I’ve seen of Prometheus thus far, I like the way the chips fell. Theron is chilling as the calculating executive, more concerned with the bottom line than human life. And she gets to wield a flamethrower, which is never a bad thing. As she says, Vickers is a badass.

Prometheus stars Rapace, Theron, Michael Fassbender, Logan Marshall-Green, and Idris Elba.
