With the start of production of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire gearing up in a few weeks, Lionsgate continues to roll out casting news for Tribute roles for the upcoming sequel. The latest is the casting of fan-favorite Finnick Odair, who will now be played by Snow White and the Huntsman star Sam Claflin.
The character of Finnick Odair is a tribute from District 4 and winner of the 65th Hunger Games when he was only 14 years old. Now 24, Odair returns to the 3rd Quarter Quell, or the 75th Hunger Games, with fellow District 4 Tribute and past-victor, the elderly Mags (Lynn Cohen). Best-selling author Suzanne Collins describes the trident-wielding Finnick Odair as “being extremely handsome” and very popular with the girls of the Capitol.
Sam Claflin played the role of William, Snow White’s love interest, in Snow White and the Huntsman earlier this year. He also appeared as the mermaid-loving priest in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 2011.
Claflin will be joining new cast additions Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Lynn Cohen, Patrick St. Esprit, and Meta Golding in North Carolina when Catching Fire starts shooting in September.
When Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) returns home to District 12 after winning the 74th Hunger Games with fellow District 12 Tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), they are immediately sent through a “Victor’s Tour” of the other Districts of Panem. Throughout their journey, Katniss gets a better sense of the rebellion brewing within Panem as she and Peeta get ready for the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The 3rd Quarter Quell), a competition of past Hunger Games victors.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be directed by Francis Lawrence and will hit theaters on November 22nd 2013.
