Brian Michael Bendis On Guardians Of The Galaxy Casting

During a conference call with Marvel executives, comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis recently voiced his thoughts on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Bendis is currently overseeing the comic book adventures of the cosmic heroes, and he addressed recent rumors that one of the Guardians would appear Iron Man 3. Bendis said:

Tony standing back and wondering what the Earth needs from him… what he can do for the Earth, for the galaxy… and then taking that back into his next Avengers adventure is a good story worth telling with Tony Stark.

It sounds like it’ll be worth sticking around after the Iron Man 3 credits to see the newest element of Marvel’s “Phase II” films. If that’s the case, it’s going to have to be someone from Guardians of the Galaxy. Why not their leader, Star-Lord?

On who will be cast in the roles of the Guardians of the Galaxy, there were reports that both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler were in talks to play the anthropomorphized mammal Rocket Raccoon or the treelike alien Groot. Bendis says, “Adam Sandler would be good, but Jason Statham would be good also.”

A-ha! So Jason Statham is a possibility, albeit probably a small one. As of this post, Marvel has yet to cast any role in Guardians of the Galaxy, but there are numerous reports and rumors about who will join the team. Actors Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi, Wes Bentley, and John Krasinski have all been mentioned for the role of Star-Lord, while Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and former WWE superstar Dave Bautista could be on the list to play Drax The Destroyer. Last week, there were reports that Marvel was looking at Gina Carano, Olivia Wilde, or Adrianne Palicki to play Gamora, “the deadliest woman in the whole galaxy.”

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014.
