A few weeks ago, the plot synopsis for Neill Blomkamp’s new sci-fi film Elysium surfaced because of test screening invitations. The film will be set in a future world in the year 2159, where anti-immigration laws create a large divide between the extremely wealthy who live on a man-made space station called Elysium and the very poor who live on the over-populated ruined Earth and try to get into the Elysium safe haven at any cost.
In preparation for Sony’s panel at Comic-Con on July 13th, where they will feature other sci-fi movies like Looper and Total Recall, EW released an image of a bald Matt Damon in Elysium in their annual Comic-Con issue…
In the above image Matt Damon as Max wields a large rifle with the words “ChemRail” on the side of it. What is ChemRail? Max is Elysium’s reluctant hero who takes on a mission to create equality between two warring classes. Based on District 9’s South African apartheid subtext, it’s easy to say that we’re going to get a social-political allegory dealing with class warfare and economic equality in Elysium.
It also looks like Matt Damon is wearing mech-type armor on his arms, perhaps to help him shoot and carry this large rifle. If we remember from District 9, the aliens’ weapons were partially organic and only the alien’s DNA could control their weapons. Maybe we’ll see something like that in Elysium too.
Elysium will open on March 1st 2013 and will co-star Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Diego Luna and Wagner Moura.
