Badass New Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Trailer

I grew up watching Space Battleship Yamato, recast for English-language audiences as Star Blazers, and this latest trailer for the new Japanese remake definitely brings back a blast of memories of Saturday afternoons spent adjusting the rabbit ears, trying to clear up the picture on a local UHF channel. The clarity never quite got to the optimal level, but that never dulled the excitement of watching a big-ass battleship tearing through space, on a mission to save the human race, blasting their way through Gamilon hordes.

This is the sixth of seven Space Battleship Yamato movies to be released, each of which is essentially three episodes of the new series all rolled into one, which will eventually be broken apart for a television release. It will hit a handful of Japanese theaters June 15, and get a DVD/Blu-ray on July 26, with the seventh and final installment getting a release on August 24 of this year. I don’t care how it is delivered, or how closely the remake remains to the source material, this looks completely and totally badass either way. I can’t tell you how much better this looks to me than the live-action interpretation from a few years ago. This looks epic, things are definitely getting grim and action packed for the crew.

Hopefully those of us who are a little rusty on our Japanese (that college Japanese class seems so, so long ago at this point) will be able to get our grubby little mitts on an English-language release sometime in the very near future. Fingers crossed, nerds.
