There is a reboot of Starship Troopers in the works—a kinder, gentler take on the story, no less—but until this new film adaptation of Robert Heinlan’s pulp sci-fi novel surfaces, fans can get their fix with Starship Troopers: Invasion. The animated feature hits Blu-ray and DVD on August 28th, and some new artwork and specs for the home release have surfaced.

Dimension wise this image looks like it could fit snugly on the cover of a Blu-ray case. Content wise it promises that there is lots of space-voyaging, bug-fighting action contained within.

The Blu-ray/DVD release comes fully stocked with bonus material. There’s a filmmaker commentary, a gallery of concept art, multiple making of featurettes, and the all important gag reel. Not disc is truly complete without the gag reel. There are also multiple features that offer looks at the animation process, including motion capture, character design, backgrounds, and how they brought everything together into the final images on screen.

In Invasion troopers from two starships come together to repel an attack on the remote federation outpost Fort Casey. Carl Jenkins (Neil Patrick Harris in Paul Verhoeven’s film), now the Minister of Paranormal Warfare, takes a ship on a clandestine mission, only to disappear. Johnny Rico and Carmen Ibanez (immortalized by Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards) have to head up a group of grizzled, battle-hardened troopers on a rescue mission. The three old friends, reunited by circumstance, discover a new bug threat.

Starship Troopers: Invasion could prove to be a nice addition to the cannon. The action takes place much later than the first film, and some of these characters have been through the ringer. You can tell just by looking at him that Johnny Rico has been through more than his fair share of battles. If nothing else, maybe it can make you forget about the sequels, Hero of the Federation and Marauder.
