Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1)
Love it or hate it, but Marvel Studios has changed the face of the modern blockbuster. Now almost every movie studio is racing to catch up with what Marvel has been delivering with its Cinematic Universe since 2008. If Guardians of the Galaxy is a big hit (like every other Marvel movie to date), then the comic book movie studio should have no problem selling a general audience on any of its other weird characters and storylines like Doctor Strange, Secret Invasion, Civil War, or Planet Hulk.
So far, Guardians of the Galaxy is the oddest and most exciting blockbuster of the summer. The cast is by far more interesting than any other Marvel movie, including The Avengers, and James Gunn has a penchant for making subversive entertainment. While I don’t think Guardians of the Galaxy will be the best Marvel movie ever, it will be one of the comic book movie studio‘s more interesting and strange entries. That has to count for something, right? – Rudie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8)
As I mentioned before, I am an unapologetic fan of Michael Bay as a director. Michael Bay as a producer is a completely different story. His Platinum Dunes production company has churned out some terrible remakes such as Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. When I heard Platinum Dunes was remaking my beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was torn.
I am also a huge TMNT fan! Even the worst of the turtles (TMNT III) appeals to me in a weird way, so I’m oddly looking forward to the new film. Although most everything we’ve heard about the Jonathan Liebesman-directed movie has been next to terrible, I remain optimistic because TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman described the film as “The Avengers meets The Raid.” That’s enough for me!
There has been some positive buzz coming from movie bloggers who got a chance to visit the film’s set in New York City, so there’s no real reason to believe this movie couldn’t return the Heroes in a Half Shell to the quality of, at least, TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze. While nothing will be better than that first live-action TMNT movie, the remake has the opportunity to update the turtles with modern CGI technology. Let’s hope this one is a good one! – Rudie
