Ever have one of those days where all you want to do is loot a safe from the middle of a dilapidated high-rise and just as you get your hands on the thing you had to climb up and down 20 flights of steps to get, a robotic drone pops out of nowhere and decides to use you for target practice? Oddball Animation faces this everyday problem head on in its animated short RUIN.
Set in a post-apocalyptic universe, RUIN follows a silent protagonist as he gets what appears to be a futuristic PDA-like device from a safe he has to kick out of a skyscraper to open. Glowing blue dots appear on his hand and apparently power the device, which is the property of Haven Nanosystems. The device flickers to life for a brief instant showing a report on something called Project: GLOVE and talks about the successful implantation of a virus into a test subject before the screen switches to the location of Haven Facility B with the words “Under Quarantine” flashing in red. It’s then that a giant flying robotic drone, reminiscent of the flying Hunter-Killer Drones from the Terminator movies, pops out of nowhere and gives chase.
The short is a gorgeous bit of animation and its makers promise more to come. RUIN is part of a bigger sci-fi project under development now at Oddball Animation although the studio hasn’t made clear whether that means a feature length movie or just a series of shorts. Whatever it ends up being I can’t wait for more. If you want to see some behind the scenes video on the making of RUIN, check out conceptruin.com.
