Al Pacino is a living legend, but recent times have seen some of the sheen come off the Academy Award-winner. Seriously, why does he rap on Jack and Jill? Actually, why the hell is he in that movie at all? Despite a lull, it’s looking like he might be in for a bit of a career renaissance, getting good reviews for his turns in indies like Manglehorn and The Humbling, both of which recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival. But could this resurgence include a stint in a Marvel movie? Pacino seems like he’s rather fond of the idea.
The Godfather star must have recently watched Guardians of the Galaxy, because he spent part of this past weekend raving about it. He said, “I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy…It was amazing. I did find it the most entertaining, inventive, beautiful film.”
As you can imagine, many people who worked on Guardians are fans of the man and his work, he does, after all, have some of the greatest movies in cinema history on his resume. In reaction to his statement, director James Gunn wrote, “One of the great things about making Guardians of the Galaxy is getting so many messages from folks in the industry whom I admire. But, honestly, being a The Godfather and The Godfather 2 FANATIC, this one just might take the cake…”
Pacino elaborated on his initial reaction. He said, “It was not something I would readily go see, but my kids got me to go, and one has to draw the line at where prejudice starts and where it ends—that was good stuff!”
He continued, “I recognized the ingenious stuff they were doing; the invention, the attractiveness of the way they were performing it. It had Shakespearean feeling to it at times. I was caught up in the big screen, the great sound…”
That’s all well and good, Guardians of the Galaxy has earned praise from just about every corner (even haters don’t hate all that much, it’s more along the lines of “it’s not that great”), including celebrities and industry types. But when Pacino was asked about appearing in a future Marvel movie in the future, possibly even a Guardians sequel, that’s where things get interesting.
He said, “I would do anything that I could understand in terms of how I fit in it. And you know, of course if I could fit in it. Anything’s possible.”
He even goes on to point out that, in his career, he’s never been opposed to playing an outlandish character, one with that requires lots of make up and prosthetics. As he said, he did get an Oscar nomination for playing Big Boy Caprice in Dick Tracy after all. And Marvel is not afraid to bring in legendary actors like Glenn Close (Guardians), Michael Douglas (Ant-Man), and Robert Redford (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), so bringing in Pacino may not be entirely out of the question.
What do you think? Would you like to see Al Pacino in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Or maybe there’s another Marvel character you’d like to see him take a stab at? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
