Space Station 76

Welcome to a 1970s version of the future, where the pants are wide, the music is groovy, and the new frontier is interplanetary. When a new assistant captain arrives on the Omega 76, tensions spark, and more than asteroids collide. This smart and quirky film-festival favorite stars Patrick Wilson, Jerry O’Connell and Matt Bomer. Take a journey on an out-of-this-world adventure.

Most of the movies on this list take themselves relatively seriously, but Space Station 76 has more in common with Galaxy Quest than A Space Odyssey. The comedy mixes laughs and melodrama in a skewering of 1970s science fiction, all featuring an (inter)stellar cast that even includes 2001‘s Keir Dullea. The flick only rates 67% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but Nick dug it quite a bit. Space Station 76 hasn’t brought its groove to Netflix yet, but you can find it on Amazon and iTunes.
