If you didn’t tune in for Monday’s episode of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, you missed a great appearance by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve almost certainly seen him before. Tyson is one of those go-to people who shows up on countless programs about space exploration, and as a talking head whenever some important NASA development hits the news cycle. He’s whip-smart, he’s funny, and his passion for science is absolutely contagious.
Tyson stopped by The Daily Show this past Monday to promote his new book, Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. As often happens during Daily Show interview segments, the promotion was largely brushed aside for more interesting conversation. Tyson breathlessly and passionately discusses the origins of the space race and explains why it’s crucial that we once again make space exploration a priority. It’s so inspiring that Stewart suggests Tyson run for president. (He’d have my vote.) That would have been a great enough way to close out the segment, but as Stewart is rushing to wrap things up and head to commercial, Tyson interrupts to point out one little thing that’s bothering him: the spinning, animated globe that opens up each episode of The Daily Show…is rotating in the wrong direction. It’s a classic moment and perfect capper to a great interview. You can watch the whole segment below, and you can pick up Space Chronicles via Amazon and other booksellers.
