Having a bad day? Work got you stressed out? Feeling like you just can’t cope? Fear not, GFR readers, because we’re here to make your day just a little more awesome. Pop on some headphones, dim the lights if you can, sit back, and watch this gorgeous time-lapse video of the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights), all set a soothing instrumental soundtrack. You’re welcome.

The video was shot by Vimeo user Alex Cherney late last month. He recorded the footage on the Mornington peninsula, near Melbourne, Australia. The result is a beautiful compilation of footage that includes the shifting crimsons and oranges of the Southern Lights backdropped by the glittering diamond band of the Milky Way. Mother Nature can put on one hell of a show when she wants to.

As Cherney explains, “The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth’s atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun’s activity increases in 2012-13.” You can see more of Cherney’s images on his blog.
