This Star Trek Vet Wants To Direct Star Trek 3

fb share tweet share

RikerWith Roberto Orci recently vacating the director’s chair on Star Trek 3, it leaves a big opening in a valuable franchise, and we expect that there will be a number of high profile filmmakers vying for the job. We’ve heard a few names mentioned as possibilities, but one director, and Star Trek veteran, has thrown his hat into the ring and is going hard for the job. This individual is none other than Jonathan Frakes, better known to some of you as Commander William T. Riker from Star Trek: The Next Generation. That certainly would be keeping it in the family.

Talking to KOMO News in Seattle, Frakes said that not only has he already reached out to Paramount Pictures, the home of the rebooted franchise, via his agent. Beyond that, he has also personally contacted producer, and director of the first two installments, J.J. Abrams.

Roberto Orci Is Off Star Trek 3, Find Out Who Is In Line To Replace Him

fb share tweet share

Star TrekThis is news that I suspect is going to make a lot of Star Trek fans out there very, very happy. The much-maligned Roberto Orci has vacated the director’s chair of the upcoming Star Trek 3. That alone is newsworthy, but the first name to be mentioned in regards to filling that slot up again is an exciting one: Edgar Wright.

A writer and producer on the first two films, Orci was tapped to take the directing job on Star Trek 3, which would have been his first job helming anything, let alone a blockbuster feature, after J.J. Abrams left the rebooted franchise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Deadline reports, however, that this is no longer the case. It’s unclear if the decision was Orci’s, or if the Paramount brass had anything to do with pulling the plug. He’s still going to stay on as a producer and writer, which seems unlikely if he was fired, but who the hell knows, maybe they gently suggested he step down.

James Gunn, William Shatner, And More React To The Force Awakens Trailer

SaberScrew Black Friday — pretty much all anyone’s talking about right now is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. Love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in between, I haven’t met anybody yet who didn’t have a strong reaction to it one way or another, and celebrities are no exception. So naturally many folks have taken to the social mediasphere to share their thoughts on the Falcon, that lightsaber, and that ball-droid we all want for Christmas.

This past summer James Gunn gave us one of the best Star Wars movies that isn’t actually a Star Wars movie in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy. He posted his thoughts on Facebook:

Doctor Who Will Be Celebrating The Last Chrismas, New Details Here

fb share tweet share

SantaThe Doctor Who Christmas special is one of my favorite holiday traditions. I’m not sure why, but the world of The Doctor just lends itself beautifully to the symbolism and trappings of the holiday, especially when there’s a dark streak and a pinch of tragedy in the mix. This year we got a new Doctor and a whole new set of regenerations, but that doesn’t mean the Time Lord will be tossing aside his fondness for tinsel-tinged adventures through time, space, and dimensions filled with mistletoe. Last year we saw The Doctor battle evil snowmen, but this year’s he’s tackling an even bigger Christmas icon: Santa Claus himself! And now we’ve got an official — and ominious — title for the upcoming special: “The Last Christmas.”

That’s a title that certainly seems to be loaded with potential subtext, especially given all those rumors that Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswin won’t be sticking around in the TARDIS much longer. Of course, that’s still just rumor at this point, but neither has the actress been confirmed for next season yet, whereas showrunner Steven Moffat did recently confirm that series lead Peter Capaldi will indeed be back for season 9 (no real surprise there). Could “The Last Christmas” prove to be the last Who adventure for Clara? The Who producers are obviously playing it close to the vest, but you never know.

Watch This Trailer For The Doctor Who Christmas Special

Well, it’s November, which, according to just about every retail outlet in the known universe, means it’s Christmas season. Everyone has their own traditions that range from extensive family gatherings all the way down to somber solo evenings at the local dive bar. One of our favorite ways to celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus, however, is with the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special, and the BBC just released a new trailer for this year’s installment.

While most holiday specials tend to be bright and festive, this is taking the exact opposite route, going dark and somber. In fact, this resembles the set up for a few horror-themed sci-fi movies (or you could probably say sci-fi-themed horror movies if you prefer) that we’re rather fond of. There’s a serious Alien vibe going on here in the tone, color, and overall appearance. Not to mention that creepy close up of a monster’s mouth opening. Set in a blistering blizzard as it is, you can’t help but thing of John Carpenter’s The Thing. And both of those are just fine with us.

Star Wars Rebels’ Inquisitor Takes The Stage: This Week’s TV Picks

fb share tweet share

The budding Rebellion is still only in its infancy on Disney’s Star Wars Rebels, but things are about to get a lot more complicated for them. In tonight’s episode, “Rise of the Old Masters,” Kanan and the crew of the Ghost attempt a rescue mission after learning that Jedi Master Luminara Unduli is still alive and in captivity. Unfortunately, that rescue mission doubles as a trap for the young rebels, courtesy of an enemy they’ll be meeting face to face for the first time: the Inquisitor.

“Rise of the Old Masters” looks to all be leading up to a good old-fashioned lightsaber fight between Kanan and his bald, pasty foe…something of a rarity in the Rebels era, when most of the Force users have been killed or driven into hiding. Plus, the Inquisitor’s double-bladed lightsaber has been seriously pimped out. Why is it that the bad guys always seem to be driving the frontiers of lightsaber development? Then again, maybe the Sith are just overcompensating.
