Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Zelda’s newest upcoming game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is still months away from the official release date, and Nintendo already unofficially confirmed that the game would get a DLC of its own at some point following the launch. This is great news for the fans of the Zelda franchise, especially if we consider just how great Breath of the Wild‘s extra content was.

The official website for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom provides an opportunity for players to earn Nintendo Points by pre-ordering the game. The website states that enough of these points can be used to buy more games or DLCs, but the bottom of the page reads that the full version of the game is required to use the DLC and that the DLC is sold separately. While it doesn’t clearly name The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom game, it’s safe to assume that the statement relates to the upcoming game.

Admittedly, it’s always best to wait for an official confirmation instead of jumping to conclusions, but it’s worth pointing out that the Breath of the Wild store page also featured the same text, even before any DLC was announced for the game. At the same time, we’re still waiting for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to officially launch, so any other post-launch content is likely to drop at a much later date in order to drive player engagement, keep the players interested, and Nintendo Switch relevant long enough for it to overthrow PS2 as the best selling console.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

That is unless Nintendo decides to finally reveal and launch the long-awaited successor to Nintendo Switch. However, considering that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is only months away from launch, the reveal of Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t seem likely. Why would Nintendo develop a game that’s supposed to extend the lifecycle of Nintendo Switch and then announce a new console, thus throwing a wrench in any plans they had for boosting Switch’s sales? Especially since the purported console is still within the realm of imagination and speculation rather than reality.

The upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will feature an entirely new premium price tag of $70, which is reflected across the entire gaming industry. And that’s only for the base game, which itself started out as a DLC for Breath of the Wild. Apparently, the creatives at Nintendo had some ideas that couldn’t be implemented in the current game, and when those amassed to warrant a standalone game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was announced as a sequel to Breath of the Wild.

So, it’s not so hard to imagine the upcoming game receiving a DLC at some point down the road. It’s suggested that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in-game map matches the scale of 2022’s GOTY (Game of the Year), so it’s likely that extra content to drop at a much later date after players have gotten their fill of the game’s original content. Perhaps in time for Nintendo to launch new hardware and port The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to the Switch 2 console. Of course, this is pretty shaky speculation, but it would be an interesting thing to see.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is scheduled to launch on May 12, 2023, on Nintendo Switch—though it’s entirely possible for it to be playable on Steam Deck as well.
