According to Destructoid, a Dutch ad for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to one of the best games ever made, also contained elements associated with some form of Nintendo Switch Online functionality. If this turns out to be true, the upcoming game might receive some form of asynchronous mechanic similar to the Souls gaming series. On the other hand, it could just be a mere ad that allows Switch users to connect online and download additional DLCs for the game.

After years of fandom demand, an upcoming Zelda game, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, might get a multiplayer component. It’s still unknown whether we’re discussing basic online capabilities or full-blown multiplayer, but the latter option has been something that the fans have been very vocal about for the past decade or longer. The closest thing we got to an online Zelda game was a multiplayer co-op that doesn’t actually run on Nintendo’s already malfunctioning hardware.

Unfortunately, Nintendo still hasn’t clarified what online elements the game would contain.

Also, we’re at least six months away from playing Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the world’s most popular handheld—if the development goes according to plan and Nintendo doesn’t postpone the game. Considering that the game is currently scheduled for May 13, 2023, it’s entirely possible that we’ll witness a showcase for the upcoming title as early as January next year. Unfortunately, it’s too early to say anything at this moment, but fresh details are expected to drop as we’re nearing the release date.

Nintendo should have confidence in their upcoming release, considering the massive and solid foundations laid by Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The original game was released in 2017 to universal acclaim and held the largest number of perfect reviews of any game from any year. It was praised for its open-world gameplay, open-world design, and attention to detail, though it did receive minor criticism for technical issues at launch. Additionally, it’s one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Admittedly, Nintendo set its own bar pretty high, but most fans would be happy if Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is as equally as good as its predecessor. From what we know so far, the sequel results from a massive amount of unpublished DLC content for the previous game, so we know that Zelda: Breath of the Wild served as a base for the upcoming game. Apparently, the scope of the purported DLC was so big that Nintendo decided to turn it into a sequel for their best-selling game.

Originally titled Breath of the Wild 2, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was originally expected to launch right about now, but it got delayed to 2023, with developers citing the usual reason—additional polishing. Hopefully, the additional polishing pays out, especially if Nintendo intends to implement any kind of multiplayer into the game. Nothing makes gamers more anxious than technical issues at launch, and we sure hope that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will avoid the numerous hiccups its predecessor had at launch.
