News regarding Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, have been very light ever since the game was announced in 2021, along with a Wolverine title—of which we heard even less of. However, the PS5 exclusive game has finally received a more precise release date—courtesy of the voice actor behind one of the game’s fan-favorite villains, the voice actor behind Venom, who said it will be released in September.

Voice actor Tony Todd, credited with voicing Venom in the upcoming game, shared an online tweet stating that the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could be out this September, with massive marketing efforts starting as early as August. Though this corroborates our previous release date report, the original tweet revealing the release date for the game has been removed, with Todd tweeting that he won’t be sharing any more information about the upcoming game. Apparently, Insomniac didn’t appreciate Tony’s disclosure. Or did they?

Whatever the case may be, it would seem that the highly-anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, featuring Venom and Kraven the Hunter—not the Jimmy Kimmel version—is scheduled to drop this Fall, just as Insomniac and PlayStation have announced. However, it’s important to note that the game might not necessarily launch this September just because Todd hinted that it will. It’s advisable that all news coming from unofficial sources and sources other than PlayStation and Insomniac Games should be treated like rumors and ingested with a grain of salt.

Insomniac Games worked on the previously-released, acclaimed PlayStation exclusives, the first of which starred Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, followed by Miles Morales spin-off alongside the original game’s PS5 re-release. The upcoming Spider-Man 2 game’s trailer featured both Spider-Men in action, but whether or not both of them will be playable in the sequel remains to be seen. Given Sony’s reliance on blockbuster hits, putting both Parker and Morales as playable characters throughout the course of an entire sequel seems like a profitable opportunity lost.

And to be entirely honest, Insomniac should keep Morales and Parker in their respective releases, with perhaps an occasional cameo gameplay sequence that would boost the sales of the other title. But there’s one aspect of the game that could actually feature both characters as playable gamer avatars. Marvel’s Spider-Man was going to include a multiplayer component, which supposedly made both characters playable from within a single title. Unfortunately, that never happened, but there’s no reason why it couldn’t happen in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

If both Sony and Insomniac Games maintain the purported release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, PlayStation’s first-party release will launch against Xbox’s Starfield, which previously suffered a crushing delay. If that happens, Sony and Microsoft are bound to clash about stuff other than Sony’s current opposition to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which is becoming more and more of a reality, considering that Microsoft already cleared a major hurdle regarding the acquisition.

As things currently are, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doesn’t have a precise release date other than the purported September release window. The game is likely to be a timed PS5 exclusive before it reaches other platforms unless the current disagreements between console manufacturers don’t escalate.
