PlayStation 4 players have been pleasantly surprised by PlayStation Store, which is now offering Deltarune Chapter 1 and its sequel, Deltarune Chapter 2, as PS4 free games. The second chapter of the game is currently available as a free update to those who already own the first chapter, while the whole game has been bundled, bearing the title Deltarune Chapter 1&2 for those who haven’t downloaded the game.

This news comes from game developer Toby Fox. He is the one-person development team behind the beloved game Undertale and now his recent game, Deltarune Chapter 1&2. These latest games are now available for free on PlayStation 4, on the PlayStation Store. While the free PS4 games aren’t a direct continuation of the previous game, Deltarune makes several references and callbacks to the previously released game – with its title being an anagram of Undertale. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Deltarune Chapter 1&2 are entirely free PS4 games, while Undertale is on a 20% discount for PSPlus members.

The release of Deltarune Chapter 1&2 as PS4 free games does come as a surprise, considering that the game was initially announced for Nintendo Switch on last week’s Nintendo Direct – which also featured an action-packed trailer for the highly anticipated Bayonetta 3 video game. However, one hour after the original announcement, the official Undertale/Deltarune Twitter revealed that the Chapter 2 update would also release for free on PlayStation 4. On a side note, previously worrying battery issues with the PlayStation 4 console have been seemingly rectified by the recent 9.0 firmware update, preventing the battery from bricking the console. So, whoever downloads Deltarune Chapter 1&2 is now able to enjoy the games for years to come.

Toby Fox initially started developing Deltarune in 2012, but the game’s first chapter debuted on PC via Steam in 2018. The game’s developer was originally skeptical about porting the game to consoles due to his lack of knowledge regarding console gaming, opting to focus on completing the game’s narrative. Fortunately for console owners, most notably PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, Fox announced and subsequently released PS4 and Switch versions of the game a few months after the game was initially released for PC and macOS.

This special for the PS4 free games comes before more releases for this franchise. Three more chapters of the game are planned as paid releases, though precise release dates haven’t been announced yet, while the game shows a total of seven chapters, two of which are already released. The game’s narrative centers around young Kris, who is destined to save the world alongside his classmates Susie and Ralsei by sealing Dark Fountains connected to a mysterious place called Dark World. The game features a bullet hell combat system, while enemy encounters can be resolved peacefully or through violence. Oddly enough, it lacks any co-op gaming mode for Nintendo Switch, or any other platform, given how the games feature three protagonists.

Unfortunately, the PS4 free games aren’t available on PlayStation 5 natively, though they are playable through backward compatibility. Both chapters of Deltarune are currently available on PC via Steam, macOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 consoles.
