Every time a groundbreaking game launches, it’s followed by a trove of its newly formed clones. Diablo, whose fourth installment finally has a release date, is a good example of this; the game remodeled the RPG gaming genre and created a whole new sub-genre called “Diablo-like.” The same thing now happened to Among Us, a party game of teamwork and betrayal which gained traction during the pandemic; its clone Goose Goose Duck has usurped its inspiration and become more popular than the original game.

According to Kotaku, this Among Us copycat stands out among the sea of others for several good reasons, most of which are entirely comedic. For example, a social deduction game is populated by lazy-eyed geese who often pass gas, which is arguably funny in itself, but the funnier part is that the farts are actually customizable. The game was released in 2021 as an Early Access release before launching as a complete release in the fall of the same year. It rode to popularity over the last year, especially following a broadcast in which K-Pop stars played the game.

However, it would seem that the game has readied new heights in early 2023, as SteamDB reported that the game had reached nearly 490 thousand players. This all-time peak was recorded a few days ago and marked a massive milestone for the game, which overtook its inspiration Among Us. The latter achieved an all-time concurrent player peak of some 447 thousand players two years ago, according to the same source. The game’s developer, Gaggle Studios, Inc., has officially acknowledged the explosion in player count, which actually caused some stability issues with the game.

Apparently, the game’s popularity is too much for its servers to handle. But instead of playing the Square Enix card, Gaggle Studios stated that they had expected the player count to rise, but not to the heights that it did. The company is currently working on expanding the capacity of its servers as fast as it can, and its official statement also includes an apology for the inconvenience caused. As for the game itself, the players are actually aware of the game’s incredible similarity to Among Us, but the amount of content it has to offer overrides the fact that the game is a clone.

Compared to Among Us, which is still very popular among celebrities and politicians, Goose Goose Duck features a greater variety of maps, more gaming modes, and more sub-roles—it’s all birds. On top of very entertaining playability, Goose Goose Duck offers plenty of cosmetics for the gaming geese besides the customizable farts. Clearly, the game’s developer had done something right to make the game entertaining enough for it to surpass Among Us in the concurrent player count. Having said that, the latter is still a massive release if you count all the other platforms it released on.

Both Goose Goose Duck and Among Us are available on Android, iOS, and Microsoft Windows platforms, but the latter is also accessible via last-gen and current-gen PlayStation and Xbox platforms, as well as Nintendo Switch.
