Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Sequel Already In Development?
It has not taken Netflix long to sign on to Zack Snyder releasing his space epic, Rebel Moon, as the platform has already greenlit a sequel.
Director Zack Snyder has seen his fair share of successes when it comes to many of the blockbuster movies, he has brought audiences in recent years. With a take on Dawn of the Dead and the epic 300 starring Gerard Butler, Snyder became a director in high demand. His filmmaking style and use of visual effects have made him a favorite among comic book movie fans, primarily due to his director’s cut of the DC Extended Universe film, Justice League. Now, it appears that Zack Snyder’s upcoming space adventure film, Rebel Moon, may also be getting a sequel before the original is released.
According to a report by Screen Rant, a sequel to Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is already in development before the director is finished shooting the first film for Netflix. Rebel Moon is a science fiction epic movie taking place in space, which will star Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam, Guardians of the Galaxy star Djimon Hounsou, Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins, Jena Malone, and Ed Skrein. The movie is inspired by the Star Wars franchise as well as the films of director Akira Kurosawa and will be an original story written by Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Kurt Johnstad. Snyder collaborated with Hatten and Johnstad on a few films before working on Rebel Moon.
While Rebel Moon is still being filmed with its ensemble cast, Zack Snyder plans to shoot the sequel back-to-back for Netflix. Deadline reports that the production of Rebel Moon 2 will be earning a tax credit in California as part of an ongoing program through the California Film Commission. Rebel Moon 2 joins the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair and Joker: Folie à Deux, along with 15 other projects in earning the tax credit, which will employ more than 3,000 people in the state, including actors and crew members, VFX artists, sound editors, and mixers, in addition to musicians. All 18 projects are believed to rake in an estimated $915 million in spending on their productions across the state of California. There is no word yet on who from Rebel Moon will be returning for the second part.
After the success of 300, Zack Snyder enjoyed a significant ride as a multi-hyphenate director, producer, and writer. He was tapped to direct Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams before moving into other DC Extended Universe projects like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. According to The Guardian, Snyder was forced to quit working on Justice League when his daughter died, leaving the remainder of script revisions and directing to Joss Whedon. Whedon’s version of the film was considered a box office bomb in many respects, so HBO Max released Snyder’s director’s cut in 2021 so audiences could see the movie how it was initially intended to be presented. Since then, Snyder has been busy working on projects for Netflix, which have included Army of the Dead starring Dave Bautista, Army of Thieves starring Nathalie Emmanuel, and the upcoming Rebel Moon.
