Yellowstone fans are currently waiting in limbo between seasons, but at least there is some good news: Josh Lucas is returning to the Dutton Ranch. The actor, who plays a younger version of star Kevin Costner’s character John Dutton, has not appeared on the show since 2019. According to Deadline, he has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming season five, which presumably means we are going to get some more flashbacks and probably some dark secrets from the past. The hit Paramount season is never short on family drama, so delving back into the earlier years of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch can only mean more intrigue.

A whole slew of new and returning cast members have been confirmed for Yellowstone season five. Josh Lucas’ fellow flashback comrades Kylie Rogers and Kyle Red Silverstein, who respectively play Young Beth Dutton and Young Rip Wheeler, are definitely going to appear, as will Jacki Weaver’s Caroline Warner. A number of recurring characters on the show, including Mo Brings Plenty (who plays Mo) and Wendy Moniz (who plays Governor Lynelle Perry) have been bumped up to regular cast members. Finally, Yellowstone is bringing in a number of new actors who will presumably either be allies or sworn enemies of the Duttons, including Kai Caster, Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay, and Dawn Olivieri.

Of course, Yellowstone is really all about the Dutton family. Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Wes Bentley will all be showing up to deal with various crises at the end of season four. The fourth season of Yellowstone concluded with the disposal of a dead body and some concrete political aspirations, so things are sure to be as intense and full of intrigue as ever. The series continues to be one of the most popular shows on television and has been increasingly met with critical acclaim, so there is really no reason for Yellowstone to do anything but stay the course.

In fact, Yellowstone has been so successful that Paramount has enlisted creator Taylor Sheridan to essentially try to replicate the show over and over. The series currently has one spin-off series, the 1883 prequel starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as John Dutton’s ancestors, soon to be followed by 1932, which picks up the family saga a few decades later with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Another spin-off called 6666 will be set in the present day.

The success of Yellowstone has also encouraged a number of imitators and competitors. Taylor Sheridan has managed to build a cottage industry of shows about stoic men squinting at the horizon around himself, which has brought in talents like Sylvester Stallone (Tulsa King), Billy Bob Thornton (Land Man), and Zoe Saldana (Lioness). Paramount is also especially eager to consolidate their array of hit shows into their own streaming platform, so they probably cannot wait until they can get Yellowstone proper back from Peacock. But just like us until Yellowstone season five, they will have to wait.
