Yellowstone 1923, the latest spin-off of the massively popular Taylor Sheridan show Yellowstone, has already been renewed for a second season before the first was released. According to Deadline, Yellowstone 1923 was approved for a second season of eight episodes, and while stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are not yet contractually on board as of yet, negotiations are happening. The first season of the latest Paramount+ Western from Taylor Sheridan is expected to stream sometime in December, though no exact date has been announced as of yet.

It is not particularly surprising that Yellowstone 1923 would be approved for a second season, considering creator Taylor Sheridan and his shows about stoic men in hats squinting at the horizon are currently the golden geese of Paramount. The original Yellowstone series starring Kevin Costner became an unexpected cultural juggernaut, which really must irk the Paramount executives who cannot yet have it streaming on their proprietary platform due to years-old licensing agreements. In lieu of that, Taylor Sheridan has been pumping out the spin-offs at a rapid pace, of which Yellowstone 1923 is merely the latest.

This particular iteration of the franchise follows a generation of the Dutton family in the titular year, as they experience the final days of Westward Expansion, the advent of Prohibition, and eventually the following Great Depression. Yellowstone 1923 stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, the patriarch of the family in that time period, and Helen Mirren as his wife Clara. Interestingly, the series will also star James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., who will eventually be the grandfather of Kevin Costner’s character John Dutton III (with Dabney Coleman having appeared as John Dutton Jr. in Yellowstone).

Yellowstone 1923 joins the original series, the upcoming Yellowstone 6666 (sadly, not a series about the Duttons homesteading in Hell), and the recently concluded Yellowstone 1883, which starred Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the original Dutton pioneers in the area. 1883 has been announced to have its own spin-off, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, and its narrative will essentially be picked up by Yellowstone 1923

While the Tim McGraw-Faith Hill story could apparently be contained to a single 10-episode season, it seems like Taylor Sheridan is getting a little more ambitious with Yellowstone 1923, hence the extra eight episodes. Reportedly, there are plans in the work for further Yellowstone series set in the 1940s and 1960s, so there is a very good chance we will get to see Kevin Costner’s character as a baby sometime soon.

In addition to Yellowstone 1923 and the rest of the franchise, Taylor Sheridan has been busy at work with other shows like the upcoming Sylvester Stallone series Tulsa King, Billy Bob Thornton’s Land Man, and Zoe Saldana’s Lionness. In short, there is no dearth of dramatic, sometimes violent series by Taylor Sheridan coming out soon, almost entirely to premiere on the Paramount+ platform. At this point, you pretty much have your pick of any generation of Duttons you could possibly want.
