The X-Men will eventually be making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and rumors are already beginning to fly regarding who could play these iconic characters. One of the most coveted roles is that of Magneto, the superpowered mutant with telekinetic control over all metal objects. If a new scoop is true, it sounds like the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Magneto could be played by a former Downton Abbey actor.

Mikey Sutton of Geekosity is reporting that Dan Stevens is “being looked at” for the role of Magneto. The X-Men antagonist is easily one of the most popular characters in the entire canon of Marvel’s mutants, and this could be a breakout role for Dan Stevens if he is up for the part. What would make this casting extremely interesting is the fact that it would not be the first time Stevens has played a mutant for Marvel.

Dan Stevens played the lead character of David Haller in the FX series Legion. David Haller is the son of Magneto’s rival and leader of the X-Men, Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X. If Stevens ended up playing Magneto, it would give him a very unique track record with the X-Men franchise.

Besides his connection to the X-Men property, Dan Stevens would be a great pick for the role. He was excellent as a ruthless superpowered being in The Guest, a small sci-fi/action film that has begun to obtain some cult status. He was one of the best parts of the recent Netflix comedy, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. And audiences might remember him as the human version of the Beast in the 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Still, nabbing the role of Magento in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would likely be counted as his most prominent role in pop culture to date.

If this scoop is true, it certainly has us wondering what part Magneto would play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on X-Men. Will his feud with Charles Xavier be pre-established the first time we meet him? Or will we get yet another take on the origins of their relationship? Even more exciting would be to see elements of Magneto that we have not seen in the previous film versions of the character. For example, will the Marvel Cinematic Universe establish the mutant island nation of Genosha? Or perhaps the orbital space station Asteroid M?

Regardless, we do have to reaffirm that this scoop is nothing but a rumor right now, but it’s undeniably an exciting one. Stevens is a phenomenal actor and would surely bring something fresh and exciting to the role of Magneto. And we hope that Marvel plans to introduce the familiar X-Men character as soon as they can. It is going to be a big event once the mutants make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and having a character like Magneto be one of the first we meet would reinforce the momentous nature of that event. If we hear anything more, we will update you immediately.
