Woody Allen Denies He Is Retiring
Woody Allen has backtracked and now says he is not retiring.
In what may go down as the shortest retirement in history, director and alleged sex offender, Woody Allen has announced that he doesn’t actually plan on ending his longtime Hollywood career. After making comments in a Spanish magazine in which the director alluded to the fact that his upcoming 50th feature, Wasp 22 would be his last, he has released a statement today revealing that this is simply not the case. Over the years, the once widely celebrated creative has been more so widely criticized by the general public and also past collaborators for allegations that have since come out stating that he sexually abused Mia Farrow’s daughter, Dylan, when she was a child.
Woody Allen’s initial announcement came as a shock to many as the director has continued to put out features despite the allegations with nothing slowing him down. While the interview stated that he was ready to move on to other projects, including writing novels, Allen’s recent statement says it was all just a big misunderstanding and that he’s not leaving the entertainment biz anytime soon. He says that the miscommunication came from the fact that he’s not so sure he wants to get into the streaming game, sticking only to making movies for theatrical releases as those for online platforms are “not so enjoyable for him.”
The news is sure to be divisive for those who love the director vs. those who were hoping his career would come to an end. When the reports broke a few months ago that Woody Allen would be trying to film his new movie in Paris, where he has since taken up residency with his spouse, Soon-Yi Previn, many were wondering if he would actually go through with it. After all, following the resurgence of the Midnight in Paris director’s alleged crimes via the HBO docuseries, Allen v. Farrow, many more one-time fans were turning their backs on him for good.
The documentary recounts the relationship of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, the life they led, and the children they raised together. As dark as it is heartbreaking, the project centers around the allegations put forward by Farrow’s daughter Dylan, that she was sexually abused by the award-winning director when she was a child. The four-part series used a stream of interviews from professionals and those closest to the family to tell the story, leaving the audience with a slew of information to make the call for themselves.
Outside of his time in the spotlight for his alleged illegal behavior, Woody Allen is known for making some of the biggest films in Hollywood. From Drew Barrymore to Emma Stone, it seems as though the director has worked with everyone during his decades-spanning career. Well known for crafting deep character relationships with impeccable comedic timing, at one point, everyone was lining up to add their name to the call sheet for Allen’s next feature.
As of right now, no casting announcements have been made for Woody Allen’s Wasp 22, so it’s unclear as to who will be joining the once acclaimed director for his latest feature. While he may not be retiring at the moment, with so many films heading directly to streaming platforms, the director’s future productions may be slowing down a bit.
