Were you one of the Wonder Woman fans who wanted to see more of Themyscira (Wonder Woman’s home) and the female warriors who live there? Patty Jenkins is talking about making a spinoff story focused on the Amazons.

In an interview with Geek Magazin, Jenkins had this to say about her plans for a Wonder Woman spin off…

“This is a story that Geoff Johns and I came up with and then introduced to Warner. The events of this story take place after Diana leaves Themyscira, the Island of the Amazons, and there are some twists and turns linked to what will happen between Wonder Woman 1984 and Wonder Woman 3. The production of the project has not yet officially started, but I hope we get it because I love this story.”

So, the Wonder Woman spin off would include events that take place between Wonder Woman 1984 and Wonder Woman 3. It will begin after Diana leaves the enchanted Island of the Amazons. We could hope that means the story will include familiar warriors we’ve seen in the Wonder Woman films, like Queen Hippolyta (played by Connie Nielsen) or Antiope (played by Robin Wright). There are many more Amazons presented in the comic series though, so there is plenty of room for growth. While it isn’t in production yet, Jenkins is hopeful the story will happen.

While the Amazons were present in Wonder Woman, they didn’t take center stage. Patty Jenkins had previously intended for the island not to be featured in Wonder Woman 1984, though we will be seeing it. It seems Jenkins is excited to explore more of the place Diana was raised. She likely doesn’t have time for writing and directing the spinoff in her own schedule, however. Despite signing on for Cleopatra and other projects, she hasn’t been shy about saying she needs a break between 1984 and Wonder Woman 3.

The new spinoff is an idea she’s said she would be happy to sign on as producer for, but likely wouldn’t write or direct. She came up with the idea while working with Geoff Johns, so hopefully, he would be involved as well. The pair brought the Wonder Woman spinoff idea to Warner Bros. together.

Geoff Johns is a screenwriter, producer, and comic book writer who has worked as a producer on Wonder Woman and 1984.

While the Wonder Woman spin off project has yet to be greenlit, it is hard to imagine the studio saying no at a time when the franchise is doing so well for them. The spin off would open the movies up to developing a wider Wonder Woman universe, creating the possibility for other projects down the line if the franchise continued to do well. The story itself sounds promising, particularly because Jenkins sees it as part of an overall four-story arc for the series.

Patty Jenkins not wanting to direct the spinoff opens up the universe to a new voice. At a time when Warner is bringing so many new projects to HBO Max, would that be the future for the spinoff?

Though they attempted to wait out the pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 is being released to streaming in December. The company is still growing its new streaming service, with more movies and TV shows releasing every month. Netflix still has an edge over other streaming services when it comes to original content. Creating a spinoff for the streaming service would be a big step forward for them.

Watch Wonder Woman 1984 when it arrives in US theaters and HBO Max on December 25th and we’ll update you with more details on the new spin off version as they surface.
