Being on the air continuously for 47 years, the game show Wheel of Fortune has had more than its fair share of awkward moments. You can now add to that a recent bonus round in which the contestant Kate — who missed the phrase “Fixing a leak” — responded to her loss with, “I kept thinking of doing something else with a leak, but I didn’t think that was it.” The comment prompted host Pat Sajak to give the camera a surprised look and drop his cards.

In case you don’t get it, we’re pretty sure Wheel of Fortune contestant Kate was referring to “taking a leak.” After responding to what the contestant said with perfect timing, Sajak leaned down and retrieved the cards, saying, “Excuse me. These get heavy sometimes.”

This is actually one of the tamer awkward moments that Wheel of Fortune fans have noted over the past year. The 76-year-old host has endured some online battering over comments made during the game show. In an April episode, for example, Sajak shocked fans when he asked long-time screen partner and letter-turner Vanna White, “Have you ever watched opera in the buff?”

The bad pun was a play off a contestant revealing they were a professional opera singer, which prompted Sajak to ask White if she was an “opera buff.” Innocent joke or not, social media tore the Wheel of Fortune host up for the comment.

A month earlier, Sajak straight up threw some shade at one of his Wheel of Fortune contestants. After Scott Ingwersen told the story of how he lost his big toe as a child — and thanked the emergency workers who helped him — Sajak responded to the audience’s applause with, “That may have been the most pointless story ever told. And you told it, Scott.”

“Congratulations to you.”

Nor has it only been for his Wheel of Fortune hosting that Sajak has attracted controversy. A lot of fans were upset when a photo of the host with the far-right politician Marjorie Taylor Greene showed up on Twitter in September.

While the most awkward part of the more recent “leak” moment was arguably more on the shoulders of the contestant who made the initial comment, these other strange Wheel of Fortune interactions have fans speculating that the iconic host is more focused on retirement than his current job. He hasn’t named a specific retirement date, but in September, Sajak told ET Online that “the end is near” in terms of his hosting duties.

Of course, if you enjoy these stunningly awkward moments, then you may just want to watch the show in hopes that you get a few more. Wheel of Fortune airs every weeknight on ABC.
