Fanbases can be pretty harsh, but Wheel of Fortune fans were especially savage after a contestant made a pretty bewildering mistake on the long-running game show. Contestant Kaycie from Houston, Texas bought every vowel and used a good portion of the alphabet for the puzzle “Live Music Capital of the World,” which was only missing a ‘V’ and an ‘S’ after Kaycie’s many spins. She ended up going bankrupt after incredulously stating she couldn’t think of the ‘V’ much to the confusion of host Pat Sajak.

Kaycie began her Wheel of Fortune turn fairly innocuously by buying a vowel. She bought the letter ‘E’ before buying another vowel with an ‘A.’ She then briefly pivoted to consonants by guessing a ‘T’ and an ‘H.’

Kaycie wasn’t done spinning the titular Wheel of Fortune, though, as she proceeded to buy an ‘I,’ an ‘O,’ and a ‘U.’ With the vowels cleaned out, Kaycie went back to working on the rest of the alphabet. She guessed an ‘F’ and an ‘R’ before landing on an express wedge.

Up until now, Kaycie’s vowel buyout could just be considered good old Wheel of Fortune luck. But then she turned down the express wedge. Turning down the express wedge was her first big mistake, as the wedge allows contestants to choose letters without spinning for $1,000 each, which would have expedited the game and potentially made her more money.

Guess the puzzle

Instead, Kaycie kept pressing her luck on the Wheel of Fortune, guessing an ‘L,’ a ‘D,’ a ‘C,’ and a ‘W.’ Knowing she was probably going to turn it down anyway, Sajak joked, “I’m not going to bother asking you.” At this point, there were just four letters left, and Kaycie was ready to keep spinning.

Kaycie was able to get two more spins on the Wheel of Fortune before she, almost inevitably, landed on a bankrupt wedge. Kaycie saw her $8750 disappear, and the next contestant in line added an ‘S’ to the board and solved rather than risking another spin. As mentioned, Kaycie wasn’t able to come up with the ‘V’ in the ‘Live’ portion of the puzzle, leading to her downfall.

To Kaycie’s credit, most of us don’t experience the pressure of being on a show like Wheel of Fortune. However, social media did not have kind takes on the matter, as viewers quickly posted baffled reactions to the failed puzzle solve they had just witnessed. One particularly cruel Twitter user went as far as to call her the dumbest contestant ever (via The Sun).

It just goes to show that no matter how close you think you are to winning a Wheel of Fortune round, that money can be easily taken away with just one spin. Being on a game show like Wheel or Jeopardy! does, unfortunately, open you up to the uncaring void of Internet commentators, so it’s no surprise that viewers pounced on Kaycie so quickly. For anyone considering signing up for one of these shows, it’s probably best to avoid social media for a little while afterward.
