A Supernatural Sandra Bullock Film Is Casting a Spell On Streaming

We won’t have to wait much longer to see Netflix’s next creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky series Wednesday. The series is premiering on November 23 which is, appropriately, a Wednesday. It will arrive just in time to enjoy the new Addams Family series when you’re with your own family for Thanksgiving.

While other members of the Addams Family will be popping up on the show, this series is all about Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega. Specifically, it follows Wednesday as she attempts to control her new psychic abilities, solve a killing spree, and uncover the mystery that involved her parents 25 years ago. All while she attends Nevermore Academy and navigates her school and social life.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman will be taking on the roles of the Addams family matriarch Morticia and patriarch Gomez while Isaac Ordonez plays Pugsley. The main cast includes Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Naomi J Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Riki Lindhome, with Christina Ricci. Wednesday is directed and executive produced by Tim Burton.

Bringing Tim Burton on for Wednesday seems like a match made in heaven. Burton’s aesthetic is perfectly suited to the world of the Addams Family and the script by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar should only help make Wednesday something special. The last time that Burton directed something was in 2019 with Dumbo, so this definitely seems like a return to form for the macabre auteur.

If Wednesday is a success for Burton, the director could have himself quite the one-two punch if he also gets that long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel off the ground. Beetlejuice 2 got some forward momentum and good news this year, when Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company hopped on board for the early development process happening at Warner Bros. Tim Burton, has also mentioned that there are plans for the sequel and both Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder have expressed their interest in returning.

In the meantime, Wednesday should be just the spooky salve we need from Burton. It’s about time that Burton got his crack at the Addams Family, as he was originally set to co-write, co-produce, and possibly direct a stop-motion animated Addams Family film back in 2010. This film was eventually canceled, and 3D computer-animated Addams Family films were released in 2019 and 2021 without Burton.

Wednesday will be the first time The Addams Family has been in a TV series since The New Adams Family ended in 1999. In other words — it’s been a while. This seems like a great way to reintroduce the family to live-action and the focus on Wednesday Addams should bring a fresh spin to the formula.

If Wednesday ends up being a hit, we could certainly hope to see more Burton-directed Addams Family spin-offs in the future. Perhaps the series will become popular enough that Burton will finally get to make his Addams Family film. Until then, you can check out Wednesday when it hits Netflix on November 23.
