It may be summer, but you’re going to want to check out the latest and greatest Christmas movie that just hit Amazon Prime. David Harbour’s John Wick-style Santa Claus movie Violent Night is available now, and it’s already climbing the charts to #6 in the US, according to FlixPatrol. If you like your Christmas movies Die Hardflavored, then this might be the film for you.

Violent Night follows David Harbour as Santa Claus, who decides to save a wealthy family from a group of mercenaries. The film was directed by Tommy Wirkola with a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Along with Harbour, the film stars John Leguizamo, Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Hassell, Alexis Louder, Edi Patterson, Cam Gigandet, and André Eriksen.

Violent Night is definitely not a Christmas movie that could be considered family-friendly, and the film more than earns its R-rating. While these films with silly concepts can sometimes land with a thud, this film hits all of the right action notes and turns Santa into a brutal brawler, anchored by an enjoyable performance by Harbour. Overall, audiences and critics enjoyed the movie, and it’s well worth the watch if you’re looking to add something new to your holiday rotation.

Violent Night not only did well critically, but it also brought in a fairly impressive haul at the box office. It beat its projections of $10 million by bringing in $13.5 million during its opening weekend and then would go on to make $76.6 million at the global box office. It only came in behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the box office during its opening weekend, which is impressive considering the MCU is (almost) always a financial juggernaut.

Ahead of Violent Night’s release, the directors, writers, and producers expressed interest in making a sequel if the first film took off. David Harbour even threw out Charlize Theron as a possible actor to take on the role of Mrs. Claus. The success of the film was obviously enough to warrant a sequel, and the sequel was officially announced at the start of 2023.

Wirkola specifically stated that the sequel would likely incorporate more of Mrs. Claus, the elves, and the North Pole into the story. It sounds like fans of Violent Night are going to get a lot more lore and action sometime in the near future. In the meantime, fans can now revisit the original through their Amazon Prime subscription.

The success of Violent Night helped make 2022 a huge year for David Harbour, as he also starred in the incredibly popular fourth season of Stranger Things. Although the fifth and final season of his ever-popular Netflix series has been delayed due to the Writer’s Guild of America strike, the actor has quite a few big projects scheduled for the near future. Not the least of which is the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, which is set to hit theaters on August 11 and also stars Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Darren Barnet, Emelia Hartford, Josha Stradowski, and Geri Horner.

Along with his Gran Turismo movie, we can also look forward to seeing David Harbour balance two comic-book careers as he stars in new projects for both DC and Marvel. For Marvel, he will be returning in his role as Red Guardian in Thunderbolts, and for DC, he will be joining a different ragtag team in Creature Commandos as Eric Frankenstein. Between playing Santa Claus in Violent Night and his comic book roles, Harbour is certainly playing a lot of very famous fictional characters lately.

Fans can look forward to seeing David Harbour alongside Florence Pugh, Harrison Ford, Steven Yeun, Olga Kurylenko, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Ayo Edebiri in Thunderbolts when it hits theaters on July 26, 2024. Creature Commandos is also expected to drop in 2024 and will star Sean Gunn, Viola Davis, Maria Bakalova, Alan Tudyk, Frank Grillo, Steve Agee, Indira Varma, and Zoe Chao. These should be the perfect action-oriented films to keep us busy until we can see David Harbour return once more as a battle-ready Santa Claus in Violent Night 2.

Make sure to check out Violent Night on Amazon Prime now when you can. We’ll keep you updated about any developments on Violent Night 2. You can also stay tuned for any other David Harbour-related news, including the impending release date of Stranger Things Season 5.
