Fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and the cyberpunk genre have a new anime to look forward to with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The series is coming to Netflix and is based on the world CD Projekt Red created in their 2020 video game, which was based on the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG created by Mike Pondsmith. Check out the trailer below.

Just a warning, the trailer has strobing lights, nudity, and plenty of violence so it’s definitely NSFW:

The world of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is beautifully animated by Studio Trigger, best known for its kinetic work on shows like Kill la Kill, BNA: Brand New Animal, and Little Witch Academia. In the trailer, we’re introduced to David (Kenichiro Ohashi) and Lucy (Aoi Yûki), two street kids living in Night City. David becomes an edgerunner, a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk, to survive. The series is set to tell a standalone ten-episode story. Just like the tabletop RPG and the video game, expect violence, cybernetic body modification, and inequitable social structures to play a big role in the series.

Hopefully, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners won’t face the same rocky start that Cyberpunk 2077 did when it was first released. Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most notorious video game releases in recent years, as the game was released in a buggy and unfinished state. The game was easily one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Plenty of gameplay previews and developer updates painted a picture of a visceral, immersive open world that would plunge players into a story filled with violence and intrigue drenched in a neon-lit cyberpunk setting. CD Projekt Red had proven themselves with quality projects like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and fans were ready for their newest game.

However, Cyberpunk 2077 started to get delayed, and concerns were raised over crunch schedules for employees. When the game was finally pushed out, it was in such as state of technical disarray that PlayStation made the unprecedented move of pulling the game from their online shop. CD Projekt Red was forced to apologize and even offer full refunds. While the PC version was playable at the time, the console versions for XBOX and PlayStation were an absolute mess. However, after spending a year implementing patches and updates, the game is now finally playable. In fact, many people would even recommend it as a good game. It was able to climb out of a bad review pit and now holds a Mostly Positive rating on Steam. If you end up enjoying Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or if you want to immerse yourself in the world of Night City before the series is released, now is as good of a time as any to play the game.

If you’re pumped for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, you don’t have very long to wait. The series will be hitting Netflix on September 13. Along with Kenichiro Ohashi and Aoi Yuki, the series will also star the voice talents of Zach Aguilar, Kenjiro Tsuda, Kazuhiko Inoue, Wataru Takagi, Tomoyo Kurosawa, Hiroki Touchi, Takako Honda, Yurika Hino, and Michiko Kaiden.
