Top Gun: Maverick aka Top Gun 2 is continuing its dominant run in theaters. On top of Tom Cruise receiving the honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes, which is the highest honor that can be given there, his new film has received the second-biggest Thursday opening in the history of cinema. The $151 million box office record was said to be the biggest, but Disney disputed it by saying Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End owns that record with $153 million. Despite that semantic, the new sequel has achieved another record. Maverick landed the best Tuesday numbers for a non-Marvel movie. It pulled in an additional $15.8 million, which beat out Doctor Strange 2 with $12.6 million, and Disney’s Aladdin which made $12 million in 2019.

Audiences are loving Top Gun: Maverick and the proof is in the huge box office gains. Normally, there is a drop-off that happens with every release, but this film is steadily staying popular. Maverick is currently at $176.3 million, and it can beat out the original Top Gun film’s lifetime domestic box office numbers of $180 million with another strong day. Granted, $180 million in 1986 was worth a lot more then, but these are still some huge numbers for Top Gun 2. The film is at $321 million in worldwide numbers after only six days in theaters. This could be a huge title for Tom Cruise, well, much like most of his films are. He did receive a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes as well.

On top of achieving such huge box office records, Top Gun: Maverick also still holds some incredible numbers on Rotten Tomatoes. The film holds an astounding “certified fresh” critic rating of 97%. The audience rating is also holding strong at 99%, with over 3,000 verified reviews of the film. Simply put, this is one of the best sequels that has ever come out. We have to agree on this. The film is excellent, and it’s a recipe to show other studios how to reignite a story that has spent 30 or so years without a sequel. Most of the time, sequels just fail miserably. Studios want to revisit a story that should have been left alone, or rather, they just go at it with money in mind. Top Gun 2 shows off some real passion and heart.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently only six days in theaters, so there is a chance the film can achieve some even deeper box office records. The film stars Tom Cruise, Jeniffer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Glenn Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, and Jay Ellis. Maverick is now 30 years past the original events of the first film, and he has been tasked with returning to Top Gun to teach some of the best pilots how to maneuver an impossible mission.

Tom Cruise puts on an incredible performance in Top Gun: Maverick and all the film’s accolades thus far are certainly warranted. It will be interesting to see how the film performs in the box office numbers this week, as Jurassic World: Dominion is going to be premiering on June 10th. That is presumably when Top Gun 2 will face its biggest drop. Still, everyone should go see this movie.
