Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved movie stars in the world, famous for his delightfully low-key attitude about life and easy-going nature when interacting with fans. The star does have the occasional misstep, which Yahoo is reporting that the Golden Raspberry Awards, known as The Razzies, have chosen to honor this year, nominating Hanks for multiple worst acting awards. An award ceremony honoring the worst movies of the year, the Razzies have been a long standing tradition during Hollywood’s award season.

Started in 1981 by John J.B. Wilson after suffering through a double-feature of Can’t Stop the Music and Xanadu, the first ceremony was held in his living room with a fake podium and microphone. Four years later in 1985, the Golden Raspberry Awards were being covered by CNN, with the show being moved prior to the Academy Awards for increased coverage. This year, Tom Hanks has been nominated for three Razzies, two for Elvis and one for Pinocchio.

Tom Hank’s performance in Elvis was nominated for “Worst Supporting Actor” in what is called “2022’s Most Derided Screen Performance,” and amazingly, “Worst Screen Couple” in honor of “Tom Hanks & His Latex-Laden Face (And Ludicrous Accent).” The Razzies, which are all very tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken seriously, made sure to single out the strange Foghorn Leghorn southern drawl that Hanks used while playing The Colonel as being one of the worst parts of any movie this year.

While he has tow nominations thanks to Elvis, it’s his other big screen role from 2022 that earned him a nomination for “Worst Actor.” Tom Hanks voiced Geppetto in Disney’s Pinocchio film, which is not to be confused with the excellent Guillermo del Toro version that also was released this year. A Disney+ original film directed by Hanks’ Polar Express collaborator Robert Zemeckis, Pinocchio was savaged by critics and mostly ignored by fans, thought not Razzies voters, all while del Toro’s film was being nominated for major awards.

Even fans of Tom Hanks have had to admit that the Razzies nominations for his roles involving some of the worst accents ever to be depicted on screen are, if not fully deserving, at least understandable. Hanks has done a southern accent before in a small film called Forrest Gump, which was also directed by Robert Zemeckis, and earned the actor multiple major awards, including the Oscar for Best Actor. This has not been the first year that the Castaway star has been nominated, but it is his most ever in one year.

Tom Hanks earned his first ever Razzies nominations in 1990, both for “Worst Actor” thanks to Bonfire of the Vanities and Joe Versus the Volcano. Nine years later, Hanks won for “Worst Actor” based off of his work in Bicentennial Man, which remains his only win to date. A 2004 nomination for “Worst Supporting Actor” in The Ladykillers resulted in another loss, denying the Oscar-winner another prestigious Razzie.

The 2023 Golden Raspberry Awards will be held on March 11th, a day before the Oscars.
