It looks like Tom Holland is going to meet The Punisher after all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a new phase of stories coming down the pike and a number of new characters being brought into the mix, there might be continued blurred lines around who is on whose side. And confirming the Giant Freakin Robot scoop from earlier in the week, Geekosity has it that Joh Bernthal as The Punisher and Tom Holland as Spider-Man are going to come at significant odds along the way.

This news about Tom Holland having to fight and battle a well-known Marvel character in The Punisher makes a lot of sense as the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows and takes on a bunch of new characters. Jon Bernthal is bringing his Punisher character over from the Netflix ranks and will begin working into a number of different storylines and arcs. Considering these two characters have had significant overlap in the comic book pages, and have decidedly different philosophies about crime-fighting, seeing them spar on-screen could be something special.

Spider-Man No Way Home Tom Holland

Tom Holland has brought a certain innocence to the Peter Parker/ Spider-Man character since we first met him all the way back in Captain America: Civil War. Along the way he’s had to grow up quickly, losing mentors and setting out on his own without as much guidance as he probably needs considering his powers. And as the story expands within the Marvel Universe, he and The Punisher will be pitted against each other, likely in a storyline that has them eventually fighting the same bad guys.

This Geekosity report does expand a little bit about how Tom Holland and John Bernthal will meet on-screen. It doesn’t appear to happen in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, but in later stories that involve Peter Parker entering his college years. In the comic books, this had overlap with Kingpin and a number of other villains. But it’s worth noting that The Punisher’s debut was in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man all the way back in the 1970s.

We first met this iteration of The Punisher when he cropped up in Netflix’s second season of Daredevil. Like what could happen with the Tom Hollander version of Spider-Man, that story involved Charlie Cox’s Daredevil at first finding himself at significant odds with the vigilante. They eventually get on the same side, but not without a certain amount of *work* and a significant amount of fighting.

We could see something similar when Tom Holland meets this guy on screen for the first time. Again, the characters stand in such stark juxtaposition which is why it always worked so well on the printed pages. No doubt they bring the same sort of tension and diametrically opposed viewpoints when they first meet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Again, there’s no word about specific timelines around when this will actually go down. But the plans are in the works and these two guys are going to clash in the not-so-distant future.
