Fans of Top Gun will be pleased to know that a new first-look pic has been revealed for Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise returns as the titular hero, Maverick, but this time he is set to be in a training role to the younger generation who crave the need for speed. Anyone alive during the time in which the original film debuted will understand that reference. And if you haven’t seen Top Gun yet, go watch it before the sequel comes out, if only to get the song “Danger Zone” forever burned into your brain. Tom Cruise appearing in a training role makes a lot of sense considering the original film came out in 1986. That’s not to say the man couldn’t lead a film by himself, he is still an action film star, its just great to see Maverick teaching the youngsters how to pilot.

Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Monica Barbaro are set to be the youngest group of go-getters in the sky for Top Gun: Maverick. Teller’s role is set to be much more important to Tom Cruise’s character, as he is the son of Maverick’s best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The new Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Teller) also has a bird callsign like his late father. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw is likely to be pestering Maverick for the stories about his father, considering that Goose died in the original film.

The synopsis for the film showcases the troubles that Tom Cruise’s Maverick will find himself in. The official description for the sequel says: “Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.” The new Top Gun sounds to be just as exciting as the original.

Tom Cruise will have his hands full with these new recruits and Top Gun: Maverick is set to have a star-studded cast to accompany Cruise and Teller. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Anthony Edwards, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, and Danny Ramirez are set to round out this deep cast of characters. Top Gun is also being directed by Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski famously directed Tron: Legacy and Only the Brave. He is also reuniting with Tom Cruise. The pair worked together on 2013’s Oblivion. Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren, and Christopher McQuarrie have all written the script together and the story was thought up by Peter Craig and Justin Marks.

It sounds like the film is set to be as intense as the original is, and hopefully, an epic soundtrack finds its way back into the new installment. At least the kids making fun of “Danger Zone” would be hilarious. Top Gun: Maverick is set to release on May 27, 2022, following several release date delays. This will be the first film in which Tom Cruise has appeared since 2018’s Mission Impossible – Fallout. The Mission Impossible franchise is still alive and well as the seventh and eighth films in the franchise are currently being worked on.
