If you ask the current Peter Parker, Tom Holland, he will tell you straight up that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will not be joining him in the untitled Spider-Man 3 movie. Holland’s proclamation alone should tell you all you need to know. Yes, both Maguire and Garfield will be returning in some form and fashion to the new Spider-Man movie. Not only will the two be back, but rumor now has it that Maguire will be donning not one Spider-Man costume, but multiple costumes.

The word of Tobey Maguire’s multiple costume change comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, who offers up the tease but doesn’t give any more detail. Trying to parse out a conclusion based on such little knowledge can be tricky at best, but seeing multiple changes in costume wouldn’t be hard to fathom. If the rumor is to be believed and the elder Spider-Man will have multiple costumes, this means Tobey Maguire and his Spidey suits will very much likely be involved in multiple fighting sequences, which would require said costume changes.

As of right now, there are plenty of assumptions going on, most involving the multiverse and just how Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield figure into those multiverse plans. We know (or so we think) that the Disney+ series WandaVision is the set up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse and that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will fully explore the multiverse ramifications. We also know the Sam Raimi Doctor Strange film will connect to Spider-Man 3, as it has been announced that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will be a big part of the Spider-Man 3 story. What we don’t know is how.

Rumors galore have been following the third Spider-Man movie, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield leading the way. With those being confirmed (pretty much), speculation falls to Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone reprising their roles as Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy. Strong hints say yes. Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro and it was the new MJ, Zendaya, who recently let it slip that fans will also see Alfred Molina reprise his role as Doctor Octopus, a fan favorite from Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. We also know that J.K Simmons will be back as the over-the-top editor in chief at the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, as he was the one who led the way in reporting to the world at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, that Peter Parker was Spider-Man.

As far as rumors and Tom Holland go, he is notorious for giving information away, he was recently pressed by Variety to reveal if any of the previous Spider-Man’s would be involved. To his credit, Holland expertly dodged a real answer. He said via Eonline, “I’ve never met Kirsten Dunst,” Holland said. “I met Andrew once, I met him at the BAFTAs. He was lovely. He was a really nice bloke and we had a nice chat. It was quite soon after Spider-Man: Homecoming had come out. He was really positive and nice.” He went on to say about Tobey Maguire that he “bumped into Tobey a few times at different parties in LA” and that the three, Maguire, Garfield, and Dunst “seem to be lovely, really nice people.” But when pushed one more time about the trio’s possible involvement in Spider-Man 3, Holland had this to say, “If they are, they haven’t told me yet. That’s something Marvel would do. ‘So, that’s who that tennis ball was!'”

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. The multiverse is upon us so look for all to return in some form in Spider-Man 3.
