Marvel Angry At Tobey Maguire, May Impact His Spider-Man Return
Tobey Maguire is slated to have a sole in Spider-Man 3, but Marvel doesn't appear to love his behavior around the movie right now.

Tobey Maguire is set for a big return to a character he brought to life, in a big way, a couple of decades ago. It’s an exciting and rather unprecedented time for the comic book universe which is seeing an unprecedented crossover movie coming down the pike. But there could be trouble brewing in Marvel Cinematic Universe paradise right now. Recent rumors from insider Daniel Richtman have it that Marvel isn’t happy with the way Maguire is acting on Spider-Man 3, calling him a “diva” and that it might threaten his role in the upcoming movie.
Richtman had this to say:
“Marvel angry with Tobey Maguire for acting like a diva on Spider-Man 3. Tobey keeps acting like a diva, that pisses Marvel off.”
It’s unclear exactly what the nature of the issue is with Tobey Maguire or to what extent his diva-ness is jeopardizing his role. It’s likely just production-level stuff considering the actor hasn’t been officially confirmed in any role yet. What’s also interesting is that while this is definitively a Spider-Man movie upcoming, Maguire is most-definitely not the lead character. One has to wonder if that’s a point of contention around the production considering what he originally brought to the role and now he’s been added as possibly just a cameo.
The upcoming Spider-Man 3 *should* put Tobey Maguire back into the Marvel Universe and he’s supposedly reprising his previous role as Peter Parker. Though those original movies were made by Sony, well outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the current Marvel deal enables them to bring back previous iterations of the character. This has things set up for Maguire to return as well as Andrew Garfield who donned the suit in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
There are some pieces that make these rumors somewhat believable about Tobey Maguire. It’s been speculated that he may not be the easiest actor to deal with and that comes from stories throughout the years regarding other behaviors. He was painted in a particularly negative light in Molly Bloom’s memoir and subsequent movie Molly’s Game. In it, he’s portrayed as an angle-shooting and abrasive dude who wasn’t exactly a model citizen at the poker table.
I suppose the rampant speculation that Tobey Maguire would appear in Spider-Man is far from 100% at this point and with news like this hitting the wire it stands to reason Marvel could cut bait if they felt the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. It also could have been a well-timed leak to use as negotiating leverage with Maguire or to just get him to tone certain behaviors down.
Other than Tobey Maguire, a number of previous actors/characters are set to reprise their roles in this film. Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro and Kirsten Dunst is said to be back as Mary Jane among many others.
I’m sure we will get more news on this Tobey Maguire-diva rumor as production for the movie ramps up over the next couple of months. The official release for Spider-Man 3 is slated for the end of the year on December 17, 2021. No matter what Marvel ultimately decides when it comes to Tobey Maguire and his attitude, this is slated to be an appointment movie that will converge almost the entirety of the Spider-Man franchise into one film.
