The variant Peter Parkers played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield didn’t know who the Avengers were in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, but apparently they’re going to find out. According to our trusted and proven sources, the pair will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars. They also tell us they will play a much bigger part in the story than they did in Tom Holland‘s last Spidey film.

That the pair would once again reprise their Marvel roles isn’t quite as surprising as the news that their roles would be bigger. We don’t yet know exactly what to expect from Secret Wars, but it will no doubt involve the Multiverse in a big way and fans will no doubt be looking for non-MCU Marvel alums like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to return at least for a wink-and-smile cameo. To have their roles inflated compared to No Way Home is a much more intriguing development, considering all the names expected in the film already.

To date, Marvel Studios has avoided 100 percent faithful adaptations of comic book events like Civil War and Age of Ultron, but if Avengers: Secret Wars is anything like the 2015-16 Marvel Comics event, it will include a massive budget, setting, scope, and many more names in the cast besides Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. As described by the fan-run Marvel Database, in the source material, the incursions — like the ones described in last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — lead to the death of the Multiverse, and Doctor Doom brings it back to life as a single planet under his rule. That planet, Battleworld, is split into wildly fantastic territories — e.g. one set in the Wild West; a prehistoric setting roamed by tribes of green, red, and gray Hulks; numerous kingdoms based on dystopian X-Men stories like House of M and Age of Apocalypse — all ruled by God Doom, whose law is enforced by an army of variant Thors.

In the source material, Battleworld is populated by multiple variants of pretty much every Marvel character you can think of. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would easily find homes there as their respective versions of Peter Parker, and perhaps even as multiple versions of the character. Maguire could play a gunslinging Spider-Man like the one teased at the end of the Secret Wars tie-in miniseries 1872, or Garfield could play the undead Spider-Man of the many tie-ins that featured the relentless mass of variant hero and villain zombies in Battleworld.

Until we know more about Avengers: Secret Wars — specifically of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s part in it — all we can do is speculate. There’s quite literally no limit to the kinds of characters they could play in the movie. They could play bad-guy variants of Spider-Man, good-guy versions of Spider-Man, or variants that have nothing to do with the webslinger.
