Umbrella Academy Season 4

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 will bring back much of the original cast of the series. It’s become one of the better ensembles on television.

When we last left our favorite “family” they had just narrowly escaped the end of the world as we know it, a full-on Armageddon that was literally at their doorstep.

But even winning kind of meant losing for The Umbrella Academy cast who now find themselves in a possibly even worse situation. Such is the way for this group who’ve been making their way out of troubled timelines on Netflix for three seasons now. It could be the case again for The Umbrella Academy Season 4.

The situation was looking more than a little dire with the group splintered on an interpersonal level and seemingly everyone working against each other without really knowing which way was up.

Things have set up the show to enter a totally different timeline with unclear plot points around the characters and some confusion about what exactly is happening in their current reality.

Let’s take a look at everything we know about The Umbrella Academy Season 4 and what to expect from the Hargreeves children (and their dad).

THERE ARE JUST SIX EPISODES AND IT WILL BE THE FINAL SEASON

One of the big changes for The Umbrella Academy this final time around is that Season 4 will only have six episodes. Other seasons of the series had 10 episodes each. The shortening of this season does maybe have a “sprint to the finish” type of feel to the story which will conclude the timeline.

This is a bit different than what we’ve seen Netflix do in the past, though The Umbrella Academy might have earned it for past performance anyway. And there was something of a sense that Season 3 tended to drag a bit in the middle.

Some of this was the nature of the story, essentially being stuck in a hotel for a better part of the season. But that one could have maybe been eight episodes instead of 10.

VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SEASON 4 PLOT

Calling it a wrap on the series as a whole might make sense from a narrative arc perspective but it will be interesting to see how the group goes out. That’s because the group is very different now than they were at the beginning of the show.

We know they’ve all struggled with the weight of their powers from basically the beginning. We picked up the show when the group had all become adults, but we’ve seen in flashbacks that life in The Umbrella Academy has never been easy under Reginald Hargreeves.

But a funny thing happened at the end of Season 3: they all came through the portal and none of them had their powers anymore. Everyone had been reset to “normal” in this new world.

Though we saw Reginald standing and seeming to lord over the new and advanced city with Abigail at his side, the actual Umbrella Academy group marveled at no longer being able to do the things that made them special (or made them a freak). This is sure to have major ramifications for how Season 4 unfolds.

At the very end of the season, we see Ben riding a train somewhere in Seoul and he smiles lightly. This would suggest that, at least for him, being a dude who doesn’t have tentacles coming out of his body in every which direction is actually something he’s enjoying. 

Beyond that though, it’s unclear what is in store for this group. Allison found her family in this new timeline, but there are some questions about that reality. Her daughter Claire is there in the exact same bed as her previous life, but now her husband is Ray who she met in 1960s Dallas (not Claire’s dad). It’s hard to imagine things worked out quite so perfectly for her.

Luther is no longer an ape, but he has lost Sloan along the way. And the group, as a whole, is fractured to the point of simply walking away from each other to start new lives. We know they’ve been good (or at least coincidental) in finding ways back to each other, but it will be interesting to see how exactly that happens in this new world.

And we will have to wait to see just how they get their powers back, if at all. Plus, there is the little issue of Reginald and just what kind of power he wields in this new timeline.

THE MAIN UMBRELLA ACADEMY CAST IS RETURNING FOR SEASON 4

What is The Umbrella Academy if not for the cast of the show? This rag-tag bunch of quasi-superheroes has been carried by the performances of its main players over the first three seasons and that should continue with The Umbrella Academy Season 4.

Elliot Page as Viktor/Number Seven, Tom Hopper as Luther/Number One, David Castaneda as Diego/Number Two, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison/Number Three, Robert Sheehan as Klaus/Number Four, Aidan Gallagher as Five, and Justin H. Min as Ben (the Sparrow version) are all set to return. 

Plus, we will also get Colm Feore back as Reginald. Even though Allison sliced his alien head in half at the end of Season 3, we know that he and Abigail are ruling over this new timeline in some form or fashion.

It’s unclear if some of the side characters will return this time around. Those would include but certainly aren’t limited to Genesis Rodriguez’s Sloan, Jordan Claire Robbins as Grace, and Adam Godley as Pogo to name a few.

THERE IS NO FIRM RELEASE DATE FOR THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SEASON 4 ON NETFLIX

The first episode of The Umbrella Academy Season 4 is titled “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want.” This could be a reference to the group being “normal” now, but that is only speculation. After that, we don’t know much about when things will kick off on Netflix.

It is unlikely to be anytime before the second half of 2023 and we could be looking at sometime in early 2024. Filming for the fourth season didn’t start until February 2023 so the timeline is going to be a long one here.

For context here, the third season had a February to August shooting schedule in 2021 and then didn’t release on the streamer until August 2022. I don’t suspect things will be this protracted for The Umbrella Academy Season 4, but it also doesn’t mean the release is anything close to imminent.
