The Suicide Squad 2

When The Suicide Squad was released last summer, it was a much-needed jolt for the DC Extended Universe, offering a combination of action and laughs that the franchise really hadn’t seen all that much of, at least in the Zack Snyder-led movies and arc.

But James Gunn breathed new life into it, even resetting things from the first attempt at the characters. It’s what made folks already start clamoring for The Suicide Squad 2, knowing there was still plenty of meat on the bone with the characters who made it all the way to the finish line.

Unfortunately, now it’s looking like the sequel might not be coming at all, with James Gunn instead focusing his attention on other characters and productions in and around this world. Still, we really want The Suicide Squad 2. Or if your rather call it this, Suicide Squad 3.

James Gun On Suicide Squad 3 AKA The Suicide Squad 2

James Gunn spoke to The Playlist and talked about all of the projects he had in the pipeline while also lamenting that there might just not be enough time to do everything out there.

With this discussion came the possibility of The Suicide Squad 2 with the director admitting that it was on the back burner at least for the time being. Gunn said, “…the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.”

James Gunn went on to say that there had been discussions about a sequel for this film, but that it was really only that, talks. Firm and concrete plans for The Suicide Squad 2 weren’t out there at this point, though he did leave the door open for the possibility in the future.

Instead Of The Suicide Squad 2 You’re Getting Other James Gunn Projects

The Suicide Squad 2 AKA Suicide Squad 3

James Gunn really is insanely busy. He has recently been appointed as CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios. He’s in charge of the entire DC universe, basically. With all of that to manage, it makes sense that he might not be able to get to The Suicide Squad 2.

Aside from running the entire DC superhero universe, the director has a couple of different things lined up that will be in this universe, including the second season of the hit series Peacemaker which took HBO Max by storm last year.

He’s also hinted that he’s working on another project that will include some of the characters from that series. There had been speculation this would be in the form of a series around Amanda Waller, though Gunn threw cold water on that notion.

We Wanted Another Suicide Squad Movie Specifically Because Of The Characters

The reason fans had gotten so excited about the chance of The Suicide Squad 2 was because of what James Gunn brought to this story and these characters when he reset things after the disappointment that was the David Ayer version the first time around. Keeping on Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Gunn cast different leads with Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as the aforementioned Peacemaker, and David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man among many others. The dark and comedic tone completely worked for this group and the movie was a resounding success with critics.

If James Gunn doesn’t have time to do another Suicide Squad movie, we probably don’t want it. No one else can be trusted with it.

Lady Gaga Is The New Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad

It’s looking more and more difficult to bring the previous The Suicide Squad cast back for another movie. In specific, there’s little chance they’ll be able to get Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn. It looks like she’s moved on.

Lady Gaga has already been cast as the new Harley Quinn and, while that doesn’t mean Margot can’t still play her, it makes it unlikely. It’s also unlikely they’d bring in Lady Gaga to play the character in The Suicide Squad 2 AKA Suicide Squad 3.

When asked about Lady Gaga taking over the character, Margot Robbie said the following…

“It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing, and I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

John Cena Back As Peacemaker?

For John Cena’s Peacemaker character, The Suicide Squad was really more of a launching off point to give him his own series, titled appropriately Peacemaker. The second season of Peacemaker is on the way and the character is pretty busy there. It’s hard to imagine them shutting down Peacemaker so he can go make The Suicide Squad 2.

Still, Cena is still playing his character so that means a return for a sequel isn’t impossible. Maybe we’ll see him in Suicide Squad 3, some day.

The Suicide Squad 2 Isn’t Totally Dead

While we can’t totally rule out a The Suicide Squad 2 coming in the future, it doesn’t look like it will be for quite some time, if it were to land at all. But there is solace in the idea that James Gunn keeps working on adjacent stories in this universe.
