It has been a big weekend of announcements for Star Trek: Lower Decks at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. First, there’s the news that Star Trek: Lower Decks characters will feature in a cross-over episode on the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the Star Trek: Lower Decks season three trailer revealed a glimpse at the Deep Space Nine space station. Inevitably this has led to some speculation as to whether characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will be appearing in season three of Star Trek: Lower Decks, according to MovieWeb, fans of the animated series can expect to see some “familiar faces” from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Lower Decks follows the support crew team on the Starship U.S.S. Cerritos, namely Ensigns Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Tendi, and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells; and Eugene Cordero respectively. The animated hit show is set to return for its third season on Paramount+ on August 25 along with the bridge crew members of U.S.S. Cerritos; Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis; Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell; and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman. In the third season trailer of the fan-favorite show, the U.S.S. Cerritos can be seen flying past Deep Space Nine, the space station that borders a wormhole and the planet Bajor. Deep Space Nine is defended by Commander Benjamin Sisko and his crew in seven successful seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Given that DSN is shown in the Star Trek: Lower Decks season three trailer, it is an obvious assumption to make that the crew of the U.S.S Cerritos will be spending some time with the crew members of Deep Space Nine. MovieWeb deduces that the list of characters from the beloved Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series that could make an appearance include Quark (Armin Shimerman), his brother Rom (Max Grodénchik) Leeta (Chase Masterson), Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton). The reasoning behind this is that all of these characters were all alive and still present on the Deep Space Nine station following the final episode of the seven-season run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Lower Decks was created by showrunner Mike McMahan (whose previous credits include writing for Rick and Morty) and will see the Lower Decks crew, among other things, attempting to rescue the imprisoned U.S.S Cerritos captain Carol Freeman and it will be interesting to see if and what crew members from Deep Space Nine will help the Lower Decks crew achieve this mission, or whether the DPN shenanigans will be involved in an entirely different storyline. With the August 25 Paramount+ premiere date for season three of Star Trek: Lower Decks just weeks away, Trekkies won’t have long to see which characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will make a glorious return. Star Trek: Lower Decks season three will run for ten episodes, streaming weekly on Paramount+ every Thursday.
