Maybe we have Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik to thank for this. Or maybe we simply have a man looking to recapture what once was. Whatever the case may be, reports are now funneling out that Jim Carrey may be looking to reprise one of his most famous roles, that being Stanley Ipkiss, whom you know better as The Mask. That’s right, The Mask 2 could actually happen.
So, you’re telling me there’s a chance? Not just a chance of The Mask 2, but two more Mask films. Warner Bros. reportedly wants two more so they can make it a trilogy (I guess we’re just going to ignore the box office flop that was Son of the Mask) and it seems that Carrey, if the conditions are right, would be open to it.
This kind of goes in stark contrast to what the creator of the Mask is looking at. Mike Richardson sees it differently, as he told Forbes, “I’d like to see a really good physical comedian [in the role. I have one in mind, but I’m not gonna say her name.” Yes, a her. He did not divulge the actresses name, but he has his sights squarely on a female Mask.
Will Jim Carrey Return For The Mask 2?
In the past, Carrey was very reluctant to return to any of his old characters. Yes, he did jump on the popularity that was Ace Ventura and it did take him a long time to finally say yes to another Lloyd Christmas, but for the most part, it would just be a one-off. So, who knows what the driving force is behind Carrey considering making The Mask 2. Could it be Space Jam 2?
A “crazy visionary filmmaker”. That is what Jim Carrey says it would take to bring him back for The Mask 2. He explained to Comicbook.com when he was first talking about Sonic the Hedgehog, “I don’t think in terms of sequels and stuff like that, I mean, this one [Sonic The Hedgehog] is kind of right for it because we have not evolved the character [Dr. Eggman] fully yet,” Carrey admitted. “The Mask I think, myself, you know, it would depend on a filmmaker. It depends on a filmmaker really. I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only do it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker. Sure.”
Now someone just needs to get Cameron Diaz out of retirement.
Why would do The Mask 2? Just look at 1994. It’s safe to say that for any actor to have a year as Jim Carrey did in 1994 you could almost wrap it up in a box and call it a career. In 1994 alone, while Carrey was still on the red hot In Living Color TV show, he managed to also star in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, and yes, The Mask.
So while he was making TV fandom die laughing with characters such as Fire Marshall Bill (“Let me show you something!”, Vera DeMilo (“Whinnnnnyyy”), and Reverend Dr. Carl Pathos (“If all I had was a clock in my pants, it’d be high noon!”) among other greats, Carrey was also creating laughs for the big screen.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t point that Jim Carrey made history in the ‘90s by becoming the first actor to pull in a $20 million fee for a movie. This came in 1996 for the movie The Cable Guy. He wasn’t done there as he also nailed that fee for the following, Batman Forever, Liar Liar, Me, Myself & Irene, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Yes Man.
With the Grinch, Carrey also got a percentage of the merchandise and for Yes Man he received 36.2% of the profits which brought his total for that movie to $35 million. He brought butts to the seats; he earned his keep.
It’s hard to say which big-screen character was Jim Carrey’s best, they all ranked up there. But since we are focusing on The Mask 2, here is a little Cuban Pete treat to whet the whistle.
THE MASK IN SPACE JAM 2
It was supposed to be a secret, but we all know how that goes in Hollywood. Space Jam, the story of an all-star basketball player (this time LeBron James), along with a roster full of Looney Tunes characters, goes head to head against a bunch of aliens who want the Looney Tune characters for themselves.
This second Space Jam movie has plans to bring in other Warner Bros. characters that include (per the unfortunate leak) The Joker, Pennywise the Clown, and The Mask, which Jim Carrey will reprise. So, maybe it is Space Jam 2 that has brought the nostalgia out in Carrey. This all could be part of a master plan to set up The Mask 2
