The Crow Reboot

  • Original Release: May 13, 1994
  • Director: Rupert Sanders
  • Writer: Zach Baylin

The Crow is a film that has been surrounded by drama since it first premiered in 1994. The movie was one of the first instances of a comic book adaptation (really). During the filming of arguably one of the best 90s movies ever made, Brandon Lee was shot and killed. Brandon Lee was the famous son of long-standing martial arts film phenom, Bruce Lee. After many decades and many attempts to reboot this storied franchise, it seems that the ball is now rolling on the upcoming new version of the Eric Draven story. Here is everything we know about the upcoming reboot.

JASON MOMOA WAS ORIGINALLY ATTACHED TO THE CROW REBOOT

Surprisingly enough, The Crow was nearly rebooted with Jason Momoa portraying Eric Draven. While that might have seemed like a crazy idea, the film had gone all the way into the makeup tests, and honestly, Momoa looked fantastic as Draven. The last time that we heard about this news was in 2016, and things were seemingly going well for the reboot.

The director of The Nun, Corin Hardy, was said to be leading this picture. It was meant to add more of a horror-like element and be even closer to the comic source material than the films before it. However, there didn’t seem to be much progress after these makeup tests had been done.

Much like its predecessor, this new reboot called The Crow Reborn had a myriad of issues from the beginning of its creation. Financing issues, script problems, rights issues, and finally the director and Momoa exited the picture due to the snowball effect the movie’s issues caused. Though this was a tragedy, test footage appeared online last year. It has since been deleted.

While Jason Momoa is certainly a massive man, and Brandon Lee was a lot thinner, this test footage works. He looks great, and really, isn’t it all about the makeup? The Crow Reborn was sadly shelved and no one was able to get anything going since then.

BILL SKARSGARD IS ERIC DRAVEN IN THE CROW REBOOT

While it seems as if the Jason Momoa-led reboot was killed, there is now new life for The Crow reboot. While losing out on Momoa is tragic, things are going in a much better direction.

It has been announced that Bill Skarsgard has been officially cast as Eric Draven in the new reboot. Skarsgard has made a name for himself in recent years, but even more so for his portrayal of Pennywise the Clown in the IT reboot. Seems like he is the person to call when a good reboot is needed.

Now he is going to be taking over as the dark and tortured soul of Eric Draven. Honestly, this is great casting.

RUPERT SANDERS WILL DIRECT

On top of securing Skarsgard, the film is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders. Sanders’s work mostly comes from directing short films; however, he was the mind behind the live-action Ghost in the Shell film. He was also the director for Snow White and the Huntsman. He directed the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and now Bill Skarsgard. While he is more known for action-based ventures, The Crow might be in great hands.

Zach Baylin is also being tapped to pen the script of The Crow. He famously wrote the Oscar-winning film, King Richard. He is also responsible for writing Creed III, which is set to come out soon. Again, this is another person attached to the new reboot that might be able to elevate things that much further.

While not much is known yet, the plot on IMDb signifies that Eric Draven is awoken a year after his fiance was murdered. He is awoken again by a mystical crow. This sure sounds exactly like the plot of the original.

THE CROW REBOOT WILL CHANGE THE ORIGINAL STORY

It has also been revealed that British singer, FKA Twigs, has been cast as the co-lead for The Crow. She is meant to play Draven’s fiancé. The singer/songwriter has been branching into acting roles, and this will be her biggest foray into acting yet.

While it is a bit odd that such a big figure would be cast in a role that was only shown at the beginning of the original film, the new re-imagining is said to change Draven’s fiancé’s role. She is meant to be a co-lead with Skarsgard. This could mean that the fiancé is going to be seen and heard throughout the entire film.

Maybe she is the one that speaks to Draven and tells him to enact his revenge. A voice in his head apart from the crow flying around and seeing his targets. This is just speculation, but it could happen.

As of right now, there are no further details regarding the plot of The Crow reboot. While the Jason Momoa picture was certainly mapped out as taking on more of a horror type of film, this new reboot might follow the same formula as the original.

However, Sanders might also want to take the scripts of old and use them to turn his version of this cult classic film into something that is brand-new and refreshing. One thing is for sure, the original story still holds up a great deal, so there might not be a need to go crazy with changing it.

THE CROW REBOOT DOESN’T HAVE A RELEASE DATE

The Crow began filming in Prague in July 2022. The film is said to be in post-production, which could mean that we all get to see The Crow reboot premiering sometime in the first quarter of 2023. A January/February release would be perfect.
