The Boys is one of Amazon Prime’s best original programs, so it’s no surprise that after the release of season 3 last June, a fourth season was quickly announced. Now, more information about the upcoming season of the superhero satire television show is being revealed, including the announcement of the return of a big character from the first season. In addition to several new actors being added to the cast, Deadline reports that audiences will see more of Hugh Campbell Sr., played by Simon Pegg, in The Boys season 4.

This comes as a bit of a surprise since the character has appeared sporadically throughout the first three seasons. The Boys season 1 featured Simon Pegg as Hugh for five out of the eight episodes. By comparison, season 2 did not feature the character at all, and season 3 only showed him in the first episode.

The Amazon Prime show is based on a comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis. The show explores an entertaining and satirical point of view of what happens if a world full of superheroes that are idolized by the public abuse their powers instead of using them for the greater good. The solution to stopping corrupt superheroes is for The Boys, a group of vigilantes that does not include Simon Pegg’s character, to attempt to uncover the conspiracies that protect the superheroes and expose their dirty little secrets.

The Boys features Simon Pegg as Hugh Campbell Sr., the father of Hughie, one of the main protagonists, alongside Billy Butcher. Hughie is played by Jack Quaid, who had a small role as Marvel in The Hunger Games (2012) before getting cast in his breakout role as Hughie in 2019. Billy Butcher is played by Karl Urban, who is known for his role as Eomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The plot of season 4 of The Boys is still under wraps, so it is yet unknown how Simon Pegg’s character will be woven back into the story. Deadline also reported that three new characters would be introduced in this season, including Rosemarie DeWitt (The Staircase) as Hughie’s mom, who has been mentioned throughout the show but has never been seen on screen before. Along with Pegg and DeWitt, Rob Benedict (Supernatural) and Elliot Knight (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II) will also join the season 4 cast.

Before The Boys, Simon Pegg was most known for being one of the two main stars in the Cornetto Trilogy, consisting of three unrelated spoof films directed by Edgar Wright and also starring Nick Frost. The films include Shaun of the Dead (2007), Hot Fuzz (2007), and The World’s End (2013).

The Boys working back in Simon Pegg is orchestrated by showrunner Eric Kripke, who is also credited as a writer and executive producer for the series. Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver also executive produce.

An official release date for The Boys season 4 has not yet been announced. However, the season is currently being filmed and expected to wrap in March of 2023, giving an estimated release date of sometime next fall.
