Taika Waititi is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director for Thor: Love and Thunder. Although avoiding unnecessary spoilers is a big part of what makes the MCU special, sometimes fans get a first look at certain elements of each of the films. This happens via toy releases or the studios quite simply giving fans a bit of a tease. The newest case of this is the image of Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Valkyrie has seemingly gone through a bit of a change stylistically and her role as the Queen of Asgard. That was a role given to her by Thor in Thor: Ragnarok.
The new behind-the-scenes image from Thor: Love and Thunder shows a new look for Tessa Thompson in the film.
Valkyrie is expertly played by Tessa Thompson. Her portrayal of the downtrodden warrior who had been defeated by Hela was excellent and it’s good to see that she will play a much more integral part of Thor: Love and Thunder. The above pic from Twitter confirms that Thompson will have a different style when it comes to how she will look in the film. This version of Valkyrie seems to have a similar costume that is more in line with how Thor looks. There is a multitude of metal disks all embedded along within the fabric of the suit that seems to portray her ability to possibly control thunder in the way in which Thor does.
The new look for Tessa Thompson’s version of Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be taking a cue from the comics. Exiles shows the character looking much like she does above for Thor: Love and Thunder. The story for the comics follows Khan, Iron Lad, a mini Wolverine (seriously), and Valkyrie as they band together to stop the villainous Blink. The comic contains a Thompson-based Valkyrie. Although the suits look slightly different, the new suit is closer to what the comics portrayed. Take a look at the suit in the comics below.
Thor had left Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in charge of things when he had to leave Asgard for the events of Avengers: Endgame. Now that she is the ruler of Asgard it will be interesting to see how she plays a bigger part in the creation of the new Thor. This new Thor, who is actually Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), is set to make her debut in Thor: Love and Thunder. This is all based on The Mighty Thor, an arc created by Jason Aaron where Foster is worthy enough to lift Mjolnir and become the new God of Thunder. It’s believed that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie might be the one to train Foster in how to handle her new responsibilities.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to premiere on July 8, 2022. That is not a long time to wait to see Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, the new Jane Foster Thor, and Christian Bale as the god-killing Gorr. How and where Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is going to end up is going to be exciting to see, especially considering he is now unofficially part of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This new chapter sounds like a whole lot of fun.
