Sydney Sweeney is set to star in and executive produce a remake of the 1968 science fiction film Barbarella. According to Deadline, the Euphoria star will be starring as the title character in the movie, which is being produced by Sony Pictures. As of right now, the new version of Barbarella does not have a writer or director attached, but various proposals for a remake of the film have been in development since the early 2000s.

The original Barbarella starred Jane Fonda as a space adventurer in the far future, tasked by a unified Earth government to capture a mad scientist named Durand Durand (Milo O’Shea) who has developed a super-weapon that threatens the safety of the universe. Presumably, the Sydney Sweeney remake will follow roughly the same plot, which was adapted from a French comic book series by Jean-Claude Forest. The original film was directed by Jane Fonda’s then-husband Roger Vadim, with the screenplay originally written by Terry Southern and heavily rewritten by a subsequent seven other writers.

Sydney Sweeney seems to be cementing a strong partnership with Sony Pictures, with Barbarella being just the most recent of her announced projects with the studio. Sydney Sweeney is currently set to star in an unspecified role in the upcoming Madame Web film alongside Dakota Johnson and Adam Scott. The film is part of Sony’s ongoing development of comic book films involving Spider-Man characters, like the Venom movies starring Tom Hardy and Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe.

In addition to Barbarella and Madame Web, Sydney Sweeny is working with Sony Pictures on a film adaptation of The Registration, a popular dystopian novel by Madison Lawson. The novel (which was released in September) involves a dark future in which it is legal to commit one murder in one’s lifetime, with the protagonist shocked to find herself registered to be killed in the next two weeks. Sydney Sweeney is set to both star in and produce the film.

Sydney Sweeney has come to prominence starring in two different popular HBO series, Euphoria and The White Lotus. In the former, she stars alongside fellow Spider-Man-adjacent actress Zendaya in one of the more controversial, but incredibly popular elevated soap operas of recent years. In the latter, Sydney Sweeney starred in the first season of the comedy-drama anthology series as an entitled teenager on vacation with her troubled family in Hawaii, which earned her her first Primetime Emmy nomination.

The original Barbarella film is one of Jane Fonda’s most famous roles, in large part due to the campy tone, frequent nudity, and surrealistic imagery of the film. Sydney Sweeney has been vocal in the past that she is up for nudity in any role that calls for it, so it feels likely that the new version of Barbarella will keep that tradition alive. The movie will also hopefully call on Sydney Sweeney to take on a different role than the glamorous but sullen teen archetype she has be saddled with so far.
