Tyler Hoechlin has been playing Superman since 2016, first appearing as the superhero on Supergirl, then continuing as the character in episodes of The Flash, Arrow, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow. Now that Hoechlin has made the rounds on The CW’s string of superhero shows, Hoechlin, alongside Elizabeth Tulloch, are finally getting their own show, with Superman & Lois. A month ahead of its premiere, The CW’s latest show has unveiled its first trailer.

Superman & Lois follows Clark Kent and Lois Lane as they move their two sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin) back to Smallville. After years of being Superman, and Lois becoming a journalist as the Daily Planet, the move seems to be a way for the family to settle down and get back to focusing on the family. This first trailer makes Superman & Lois look more like a drama that just happens to star a Kryptonian and his wife and kids.

Superman & Lois is being developed by Todd Helbing, who previously worked on such shows as Spartacus, Black Sails, and The Flash, and Greg Berlanti, who helped create the Arrowverse of shows and has been integral to creating The CW’s superhero roster. In addition to the Kent family, Superman & Lois also stars Nip/Tuck’s Dylan Walsh as Lois’ father Samuel, and Entourage’s Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang.

The CW decided to push many of their high-profile new series to mid-season this year. In addition to the February 23rd premiere of Superman & Lois, the network is also debuting Walker on January 21st. Supernatural has been the most popular series on The CW for years, but with that show concluded, The CW is hoping to bring some of that audience back with Jared Padalecki on Walker, as well as with the continued popularity of Riverdale.

But more than ever, The CW is relying on their superhero shows for their lineup. As of next month, The CW will only have two superhero shows currently on the air: Superman & Lois and Batwoman, which isn’t receiving the best ratings in its second season. The Flash’s next season is coming up in the near future, while Supergirl and Black Lightning will soon be airing their final seasons. Beyond those, The CW will also have Legends of Tomorrow and Stargirl to look forward to some time in the future.

Yet a new Superman show is a big get for The CW. Smallville was a massive hit for The WB, before the network combined with UPN to make The CW. For ten seasons, audiences watched Tom Welling’s Clark Kent in his hometown and beyond. Prior to that, ABC’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman was also a hit. With Arrow already gone and many of The CW’s other superhero shows ending soon, The CW is banking that Superman & Lois will be a big hit for them.
