With the fifth season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Stranger Things set to be its last (to the relief of some stars), fans are wondering what they can expect from our favorite group of children-turned-teens from Hawkins and the adults that try to keep up the pace. And, while his character was taken down during the last season, Matthew Modine is hoping that the Duffer Brothers will bring his Dr. Martin Brenner back to life for one more tussle with the ragtag group of kiddos. During a recent interview with Radio Times, Modine said that he’s hoping “that there’s some way to resuscitate Dr. Brenner and put him in season 5 because it would be wonderful to be part of the last season.”

If the evil genius doctor were to return to Stranger Things, it would come as a shock to audiences, but would certainly not be out of the realm of possibilities. After seemingly meeting his doom at the hands and razor-sharp teeth of the Demogorgon in the show’s premiere season, the character shocked audiences when he made a comeback in the latest installment. Modine notes that “he survived Vecna” and that while we’re presuming he’s dead following the end of Season 4, “we didn’t really see him dead – he was just lying there in the dirt” – leading us to believe that anything is possible in the topsy-turvy world of Stranger Things

As a refresher, Dr. Martin Brenner was introduced during the first season of Stranger Things as the director of Hawkins National Laboratory, where he stood at the helm of the experiments being performed on superpowered kids like Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). Although he was first safe from his secretive experiments, danger caught up with him at the tail end of Season 1 when he was attacked by the Demogorgon and seemingly met his demise. However, the Doc resurfaced during the fourth season to cause even more havoc on Eleven and her friends, serving as one of the season’s primary big bads before presumably ending up dead in the penultimate episode.

Just like in any great sci-fi or horror project, there’s always the possibility of a character coming back (justice for Bob!). And, with the Duffer Brothers (hopefully) wrapping up the story with a neat bow in Season 5, who knows who they may add to jazz up the cast list? But, seriously, if Dr. Brenner is on the call sheet for Stranger Things, we deserve to see Sean Astin’s Bob again – it’s what the fans want!

Unfortunately for those of us eager to see how it all ends, series star Finn Wolfhard recently revealed that the final season will likely not air until 2025, meaning that we have a solid two more years of waiting ahead of us. Almost a decade in the making, Stranger Things will bow out seeing many of its leading cast members having launched their careers from their credits in the show. Wolfhard nabbed a leading role in films like It and Ghostbusters: Afterlife while his co-star Millie Bobby Brown has become an Emmy-nominated performer and starred in the now-Netflix-film-franchise, Enola Holmes.

And while it will be difficult to see them go, even the leading actors know it’s time for Stranger Things to wrap, with David Harbour recently saying that it would be “bittersweet” but that he was ready to move on to other projects. What lies ahead in Season 5 of Stranger Things is anyone’s guess, but we’re sure the Duffer Brothers have some shocking and explosive moments up their sleeves.
