Steve Martin Set To Retire?
Steve Martin has been in show business for over 60 years, and it seems that he is now contemplating stepping away from appearing in entertainment.
Steve Martin has been in the show business for more than 60 years. When thinking about that number, it sounds just as daunting when reading it and saying it aloud. Imagine being Martin and telling yourself that you have been in the game for that long. Even though he is currently busy with many projects, the man is contemplating retirement. He currently has the #1 show on Hulu, Only Murders in the Building, which has received a whopping 17 Emmy nominations. He also has his 12th book coming out, a live stage show with Martin Short, and a documentary about his life being produced. With all that looming, the perennial comedian has been speaking about finally stepping away.
According to Steve Martin, “There may be a natural end to that — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty. When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.” He is referring to the stage show that he is going on the road with, which has him paired with Martin Short. The men have been going on the road together since 2015, with A Very Stupid Conversation. This led to 2017’s An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, which led to 2021’s The Funniest Show in Town at the Moment. Now, they are gearing up for their presumed final tour with one another. It is quite odd to think about Martin and Short not performing with one another, or simply not performing at all. However, after 60 years in the business, anyone would be over it.
Steve Martin is a generational talent. The man was a producer, writer, and cast member for some of the best years of Saturday Night Live and starred in too many comedies to name. Let’s just say his best is The Three Amigos. You can’t argue with us. He also is a whiz on the banjo. But again, at 76 years old, and being in the game for over 60 years, he should be taking time to relax for once. Martin Short is also 72 years old, and he might not want to continue acting either. But Martin has stated that he won’t seek other opportunities after this long stretch of projects he is currently involved in. Quite honestly, he shouldn’t.
Steve Martin is the comedian’s comic. The man is revered by mostly everyone who has ever taken the stage, and his work ethic has proven that tenfold. No matter what he has done in the business, it has always killed. That is why he has been at the top of his game for over 60 years. At some point though, everyone wants to breathe. We certainly don’t blame him for wanting to do so.
For now, everyone can watch Only Murders in the Building, which is streaming on Hulu. It became one of the fastest liked shows on the platform, leading to the massive amount of Emmy nominations that it holds, which includes a Best Actor nomination for both Steve Martin and Martin Short. The third season is currently being worked on. Martin truly has nothing left to prove, not that he was trying to prove anything to anyone. He can certainly retire knowing that he was one of the most influential comedians in the history of the genre.
