It has been some time since we have seen a Stephen King adaptation hit theaters. The last adaptation to be released is Firestarter, which was released in May as a streaming platform movie for Peacock. The last adaptation to hit movie theaters is It: Chapter 2, which was released in September of 2019. Also, Doctor Sleep was released shortly after in October of 2019. The next adaptation to hit movie screens was meant to be Salem’s Lot, which was supposed to release in September of this year, which seems to be the preferred release for King. However, it has been announced that Salem’s Lot has now been pushed back to April of 2023. That is some crushing news for those who are a fan of this story.

Warner Bros. has announced the delay of this new Stephen King adaptation. Salem’s Lot joins the growing list of films that seem to be getting pushed back on a regular basis. Granted, some productions have had to deal with pandemic restrictions, but it doesn’t make the news of the delay any less disappointing. It could mean that Gary Dauberman needs more time to iron out the details of the film’s final cut, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. Dauberman has written and directed the new feature, and he was responsible for writing both It reboots, and directing and writing Annabelle Comes Home. He clearly has the right resume for the horror genre, so fans might want to give the man a break when it comes to this delay.

Salem’s Lot stars Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard, John Benjamin Hickey, Bill Camp, Jordan Preston Carter, and Pilou Asbaek. The film follows the classic Stephen King story that surrounds an author who returns to his hometown. However, the author then starts noticing that the townspeople are slowly being turned into vampires. The author, who we can assume is meant to be King, is being portrayed by Lewis Pullman.

Salem’s Lot isn’t the only film that Gary Dauberman wrote which has been delayed. The Last Train to New York, which is a reboot of the Korean hit Last Train to Busan, has also been pulled from the schedule by Warner Bros. The reboot of House Party has also been pulled. The merger that took place between Warner Bros. and Discovery sounds like it might be causing quite a bit of trouble for upcoming films, including the anticipated Stephen King adaptation. Hopefully, things can be worked out while the company continues to transition. We would all like to have to stop dealing with steep delays.

Salem’s Lot will now be premiering on April 21, 2023. For now, fans of Stephen King can watch Firestarter, on Peacock. Both It chapters have also been added to Netflix. There are plenty of adaptations to watch, including the original two-part television mini-series of Salem’s Lot. It was released back in 1979. Or fans can watch the 1987 sequel, A Return to Salem’s Lot. For now, we will all have to wait to see this new, possibly contemporary, look at one of the classic King stories.
